Man...The Elephant Man and The Straight Story are just phenomenal dramatic character pieces. His Twin Peaks work is the pinnacle of onerous filmmaking. Difficult to pick, but I went with The Elephant Man as it has a bit of everything in it.

I don't agree. I think my take away may and probably is different then yours. I get pretty deep into movies I like and sometimes reading fan theories and IMDb trivia detracts from the movie. Also if your not a fan it's like most cult movies if you go in expecting to be blown away or expecting to be wowed the movie rarely meets expectations

Personal note I was in german 1 in HS with my future brother in law and one of my future best friends, both whom I didn't know or like at that time. One of them brought in the lost highway soundtrack
for the frau to translate Rammstein lyrics. She declared the music trash and refused to listen to any more
I always watch movies with nothing to go on if it's actually interesting.
Lost Highway is the soundtrack album for the 1997 David Lynch film of the same name. It was produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and includes original music from the film recorded by Reznor, Angelo Badalamenti and Barry Adamson, as well as songs by other artists used in the film. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and reached Gold status in the United States and Platinum in Canada.

That song is about marrying a corpse so i can see why

I remember a German dude who was into that type of music said that Rammstein sucked 😆

I like that Twin Peaks: The Return was included, it’s definitely that. We’re really lucky to have gotten that from Lynch and Frost.
Beyond that, it’s a tossup between Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. I’m a big David Lynch fan, and this news today was a gut punch.

From everything he's done, I've only seen The Elephant Man <Fedor23>

I really got into "Mulholland Drive" for a spell. Had theories for days. Must've been on some good drugs back then, because I can't capture that same intrigue when I watch it now.

All in all, I respect the man for doing what he wanted and creating his own vision with damn near anything he touched, but I'd be lying if I said I was a big fan. Most of his shit just confuses the fuck outta me, and not in a good way.

Dude only has 10 films. Might as well throw them all in the poll, you're already at 9 haha.

Personal favs are Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive.

TLDR, drinking to get drunk is ok, not everyone is a connoisseur.

I love movies. I can't sit still and read and I can't even watch anything at home without closed captions to hold my attention. I try to only expect to be entertained. If a movie truly gets my attention I'll deep dive. There is a documentary on the hidden meaning of the pantry in The Shining. These guys count the boxes, note the placement, etc etc etc. it's cool if you get off on obsession.

My wife isn't any closer to getting a Lynch movie when I give her my takes. She liked the original Twin Peaks but doesn't like The Return. I have the limited edition numbered box set, I love this shit. I look at it like bourbon and cigars. I have 1k bottles of bourbon and Cuban cigars in my basement. If you hate bourbon and cigars you won't get it. If you drink to get drunk and smoke to get a nicotine buzz they will do the job but it's subtleties are over your head. So the question is do I really love Lynch movies fancy booze and cigars? Or am I just trying to impress people I'll never meet online?

And I gave up on Rammstein lyrics a long time ago.(Seemann) They do put on a hell of a show

Rant over

Mulholland Dr, easily

Followed by Blue Velvet which curiously isn’t an option in the poll

Eraserhead after that.

Admittedly, I’ve always been a bigger fan of his original and distinct style than I am of his actual films.

A lot of his movies have a made for tv aesthetic(and a lot of time made for TV acting) but he was also the only filmmaker who successfully made movies that felt like a dream. Maybe Brian de Palma has his moments too but Lynch was the best at that.

It’s hard to accomplish. Some years back, Ryan Gosling directed an obvious Lynch rip off called Lost River and just shows how hard it is to seamlessly do surrealism like Lynch while also not going totally over the top.

I really only consider Mulholland Dr to be a masterpiece.. and to a lesser more pioneering sense Eraserhead.

I was never a massive Twin Peaks fan and being a big Twin Peaks fan seems to be the key to being a huge Lynch Stan or just thinking he’s a strong filmmaker but doesn’t ultimately stack up to a lot of his most celebrated contemporaries.

RIP

Lost Highway for me, I discovered it when I was 14 y/o and I had no idea wtf I was watching at the time but it all made sense to me on an intuitive level at the same time.
This hasn't changed to this day and I love all his work, apart from Dune and the 2nd half of Inland Empire.
As someone else said ITT, Twin Peaks S03 felt like an 18 hour culmination of his life's work as a filmmaker.

The Twin Peaks saga is something everyone should watch through at least once. The rarest combination of bizarre and brilliant.
