For me it was Lateralus.

Hope they release a new album soon.

Aenima was their classic imo, but Lateralus is equally as good, and possibly better because it is more cohesive, flows better and doesn't have the stupid skits that Aenima had. All their releases are quite good but I place the two I mentioned at the top.

i've always been partial to aenema. 46 and 2, and the title track are great f'in songs

Lateralus

it took about a year
for me to like 10,000 Days
then it was on repeat

my favourite was undertow
for years
until lateralus blew my mind

Aenima was the best. It really captured the depravity and the emotion, which is the point of having lyrical content in the first place. The marriage of the music and Keenan's expression was peaked at Aenima, as the topics were still personal and the musicians still had tons of ideas so they had much to choose from. Lateralus tamed a bit, lost the point of the messages, dumbed down and compensated by being more head-bang friendly... but those of us who appreciate Tool know the only head banging will be upon the fault line.

Lateralus had Schism and Lateralus as their powerful pieces... but Aenima's B class songs were better than the rest of the Lateralus album. Pushit, Stinkfist, 46 and 2, Aenima, Third Eye... Aenima was a no lose album.

Truth be told, Lateralus was the album my friend first introduced me to. I was hooked, until I listened to the rest.

As a band - Aenima
Danny Carey's best album - Lateralus

10,000 days had one good song, Jambi. The Pot was an utter mainstream rock disaster and turned me off to Tool almost instantly. I still respect their prior work, but Tool is no more.

Dammit, now I'm on Youtube.

EDIT: Tool and NIN basically soundtracked my life from 17 to 20. Everything else was consequential, and, rightfully so.

I think the people here should also state the album they got up on. If you heard Schism and ended up only listening to Lateralus and 10,000 days you've got a really skewed view of Tool and have missed out on gems like Cold and Ugly from the early days.

And by the way if you haven't heard No Quarter (yes, the Zep cover) treat yourself.

Its a tough decision between Aenima and Lateralus. I voted for Lateralus because I like that album a little more.

Rumor has it a new album should come out 2014..

Maynard just has too much fun with Puscifier and their shows

Puscifier is fucking awesome by the way.. Any Tool fan should at least own "V... is for Vagina" and "Condition's of my Parole." Great music.

Aenima got me into Tool, and I downloaded nearly all of their stuff immediately. I didn't get those two older albums though. I went ahead instead and started listening to The Perfect Circle (Maynard's other venture.)

Opiate was garbage and Undertow was extremely horribly mastered, almost completely ruined a great album. Aenima and Lateralus were fucking amazing and I'm not sure why you don't like 10,000 Days, but that's on you.

Not quite sure the love for Opiate or Undertow, honestly... Absolutely in love with Tool, but haven't ever been a huge fan of Opiate at all, and Undertow I owned, but it wasn't until Aenima when I was like holy shit, Tool might be better than NIN, and then Lateralus cracked my fucking head open.

Lateralus is probably the best, but Aenima and 10,000 Days both also kick much ass. Great band.

10,000 days had two good songs, and was otherwise meh. I don't count Right in Two for 10,000 days because it came out 2 years before the album was released... they just stuck it on the album because it needed a home.

Yeah, Undertow was probably their weakest album... I felt that Opiate really opened the door for the blatant attacks on Christianity... which were still a big deal at the time. If you discount other musics for simply being relevant to the times, you can count out a ton of songs you really enjoyed throughout your life.

If you take MJK out of the equation, Lateralus is a better album... but you can't.
