Favorite Karate style?

Shotokan from KUGB guys like Elwin Hall, Frank Brennan and the oldboys from Enoeda Sensei.

personally I have only taken shotokan karate. so I prefer that, but I can tell you right off the bat I don't like the way kenpo karate kata's look. too much slappy stuff going on.

goju ryu of course since i do it

also uechi ryu and all the knockdown variants

I love goju ryu because we only punch to the body.

Haven't taken Karate, but the style I like the most is Kyokushin.

I think your philosophy on fighting is too different and layered for most people to get from a single post. Anything you say, even if it is right in the context of your whole philosophy, is wrong when you are imagining that the rest of the picture is what you already know.

^^^This is an interesting thesis. My 'base' karate style is Tang Soo Do. I do not care for the Japanese karates, including Okinawan forerunners. I do not care for TKD. I do think kenpo, including the Chinese originals are fascinating, but complex and maybe too sophisticated.

In that context, SummerStriker I am not sure you thesis makes sense. I'm still progressing, though aging. I submit the rest of the picture is what you don't know and have found foreign to your way of sport-fighting MMA thinking.

For example, on your "training vid T," you suggested that if I can go inside of your straights or crosses, "...that's just fighting." From a practical standpoint, nobody can argue with the correctness of your conclusion.

edit: StrikingGuy has put up some great analysis of Machida's MMA/karate striking style.

YET NO ONE HAS proposed A SOLUTION ON HOW TO BEAT JONES / NO ONE BUT ME KNOWS THE ANSWER OF HOW TO BEAT JONES WITH KARATE:
I can agree to an extent. Machida doesnt use much head movement to avoid punches. He relies more on the speed of his footwork. However Jones leaves himself open just as much as you say Machida does. Look at this gif for example.

bones1.gif

It was basically hook counter vs hook counter in which BOTH landed but Jones was coming forward so he had more impact. Jones is making the same exact mistake you say Machida is making here. Leaving himself open while diving in with a counter yet you only notice Machida's flaw. If machida wouldve used a str8 punch to counter instead of a hook he wouldve knock Jones out giving us Machida vs Rashad all over again. Here is Machida's str8 punch counter.

^^^^It's not that I alone know the karate answer to Jones (Beginning with TSD Mommy's 1-step), the answer is crystal clear by traditional karate principles.

For now let's insert SummerStriker's SHADOWBOXING training vid #2.
I'm new to shadow boxing, and posted a little about this last week on another thread. I posted one video, got some feed back, and made another. I'm really interested in getting to the core of MMA shadow boxing and becoming good at it.

I'd appreciate any comments, however harsh. QuoteChopped to Vid#2

Where should I go from here?

^^^^SummerStriker, you're doing some nifty work here; WHAT STANDS OUT IS YOUR LAST STATEMENT IN BLUE....

Imagine you're lyoto machida in front of Jones (UFC 140) faced with the incoming Right fron Jones doing what,? then what's maybe a low left leg kick aimed at your front right leg, maybe...? or is Jones stepping with that left leg--what's really going on with that extended Right of Jones..;? Oh, and he's got a free left ready to go,? and he's moving in I could be easily manhandled (yes, just happened a few minutes earlier in the fight a real, immediate danger....).

How does Shadow boxing in any way prepare you mentally for this conflict??? SHORT ANSWER: IT DOESN'T. Only karate can prepare you mentally to address a compound assault like the one Jones is presenting Machida (refer to ufc 140 Jones strong counter left gif, to refresh your memory). The shadow boxing, you're feeling good, you're doing good, putting up good techniques and a few trickey combos.... :) QUESTION: how's this an answer??? Again (Shadowboxing), it's not.... :icon_sad:

NOW WE'VE PUT THE CONTEXT OF THE JONES / MACHIDA TITLE FIGHT SQUARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BIGGER PICTURE OF KARATE. SQUARE IN THE CONTEXT OF JONES' CRUCIAL KNOCKDOWN OF MACHIDA, LYOTO BEING ONE OF THE BEST STRIKERS & DEFENSIVE FIGHTERS IN MMA.

COMMING UP NEXT, a window in the TSD answer to the Jones boxing gambit against Machida (FC 140) which resulted in the knockdown of Machida and essentially to the very soon end of the title bout.

And don't forget, that left kick feint/ could be a step-set up for a clinch and Right knee--JOnes loves knees and with his height gives him a reach advantage over you, 'Lyoto.'

holy shit, karatestylist loves to type to himself. Not to mention this is a simple "What is your favorite Karate" thread, not "How to use Karate to defeat Jones 101"

not only that but he even had a conversation with people that aren't here either.

Yeah, he's an atrocious poster.

Favorite style is Shotokan, given I did seven years of it.

Haven't taken Karate, but the style I like the most is Kyokushin.

this. cant really take a karate style serious if its not fullcontact.

even did shotokon for a year but i pretty much hated it afterwards.

Noone who knows my post history needs telling, but it is kyokushin and any of is related styles (ashihara, enshin, shidokan etc) for me.
