Just recently rewatched Lesnar vs Carwin, and I honestly forgot how brutal that first round was. People can say what they want about him, but Lesnar is a truly tough SOB.
We see fights like this frequently in MMA- a fighter is very dominant in the first round, and winds up losing due to 1.) fatigue: in the case of Carwin vs Lesnar, or recently Lombard vs Magny
or 2.) the sheer craziness of MMA: Many people didn't score the first round of Hendo-Shogun 2 a 10-8 for shogun, but Shogun was ridiculously close to finishing that fight and wound up losing by an H-bomb out of nowhere! Edgar vs Maynard 3 was the same case- I remember thinking- where did that right hand come from? And even more recently- Hendo vs Lombard...although by now we should all know you can NEVER count out Dan Henderson (did I just quote Joe Rogan?)
I'm sure we would potentially see more instances of "case 1" in boxing and kickboxing if the rounds were longer duration. Those sports are ridiculously challenging in their own right, but the combination of shorter duration rounds and a lack of grappling/cage fighting is more conducive to cardio.
What are some of your favorite fights where the winner dropped the first round 10-8?
My personal fav- Edgar Maynard 3.
