Fake comic book fans

Its crazy how sensationalised everything has become. I'm a grown up lol but I still love comics and comic related multi-media (movies, series , cartoons etc). There are a lot of people that claim to be comic book fans but have never actually collected comic books. It's kind of odd to me. Its like people today like the culture of ideas as instead of the actual idea its self.
If a person was into hot rods for example I could understand how they may become familiar with car models and parts before they were actually able to build a car because of financial factors. But with comic books... they are cheap lol like really cheap. So anyone claiming to be a comic book fan but doesn't own a single comic book seems silly to me. If a person is a fan of Marvel or DC movies they should say that.
I think its more the idea that people have this innate need to be a part of something... Comic book culture is no different I guess.
 
Well, I never was a comic book fan, I'm just trying to even things out....

Because people can just download them now. Its like music lovers who dont own any records. Shit happens.
 
You can be a fan of something yet never engage in every facet of said fandom.

I'm a fan of cars, though I've never really put one together nor have I collected any.

Huge fan of skateboarding, never was able to really do more than ride.

If someone likes to watch baseball, but they don't play baseball does that make them a fake baseball fan? Or just different than someone who does both?

I was a fan of Saturday morning comic book cartoons growing up, but never read them. They always seemed so fragmented with spins offs and weird shit...I just wanted to follow one storyline and have it make sense.
 
I still have a trunk full of comics I bought as a kid. I bust em out every now and then, just to look through them. I sometimes forget what I got in there.

I love Marvel stuff, but I'll admit I never collected comics, or have been inclined to lie about collecting any. There's just too much there, with too many retcons and timelines.

I mainly just watch the series, movies, and play the games like Ultimate Alliance, and will occasionally look at the wiki.

Sometimes I'll try to follow a storyline by looking up the panels online, but that's the most I've done on terms of comics.
 
A few years ago I was a few comics away from having the entire ULTIMATE MARVEL library . Great universe and loved how they changed the back stories etc... I did hate how they ended the universe after the events of Apocalypse.
 
It's because comic book characters are really cool but actual comic books are a jumbled mess of retcons, rewrites, reboots, non-canon crap that's too hard to follow.
 
With the advent of the internet and sites where you can literally view the comics online... for free... who the fuck pays for a comic book anymore?

It's like paying for porn essentially.....

I have a huge collection of Groo in the attic lol, with of course the ones I started on too like Spider-Man and Batman etc etc.

I have the first few of wild dog too, they stopped carrying it at the grocery store so I never got anymore. I have the first 5 i think

What about someone who says they're a huge Mark Twain fan; they never read any of his writing, but say he has a cool mustache.
Are they fake Twain fans? Imo, yes. They are just misguided mustache aficionados.
