Fair to use soccer shin guards underneath sparring shin guards?

Several years ago while sparring a much bigger opponent in a Krav Maga gym, I threw a pretty awful round kick which ended up hitting my partner's raised knee, and next thing I knew I had a broken tibia. After several months of recovery and physical therapy, I was sparring a friend in my basement and threw a front kick which ended up hitting his elbow when he tried to block, and I ended up with a contusion right where I had previously broken it and couldn't walk for 2 weeks. Needless to say, I have bad luck when it comes to kicks and have a *justified* fear of throwing them.

I'm getting back into Krav again, and just purchased some Revgear Gel Defender shin guards, but am wondering if it would be acceptable to supplement them with some thin, hard soccer shin guards underneath. It seems like it wouldn't cause any more damage to my partner since the other shin guards would be over them, while at the same time almost guaranteeing that I would not get an injured leg.

What do you guys think?

I had the same issues....I just got more serious about boxing.

I would think that you need to check with your sparring partners and see if it's okay. I don't mess around with MT or Krav Maga but I would equate that to using those plastic knuckle covered combat gloves underneath sparring gloves, which is a big funking no no.

Asking us is pretty weird to be honest, we aren't the people that train with you at all.

You have coaches, sparring partners that are directly affected by that, it's always better to explain your situation to them.

But just imo, if that is risking your chance of never able to walk again or something. I don't see a problem with it. May be just underneath that one shin guard but not both and sparr light. Well..tbf I don't know what kind of training Krav Maga even do. If it's muay thai, I am fine with it, perhaps explain to your partner and if they find discomfort after a kick or something then go lighter or drop it.

Don't know how serious your injuries are, but imo unless you are going pro and even then, it is never worth training when you know you are highly risking something permanent(Such as never be able to walk), train safely should be number one priority always. If necessary you can consider changing the way you fight, or never kick with that injuried leg, or change your martial arts completely. IDK how serious it is, judge by yourself. Good luck.

In my opinion you should pay more attention to boxing in the meantime, while your leg heals completely.

We had a guy that used to wear shoes under his shinpads... He was a vet too, world champs in Thailand, etc the works. Real super nice guy, just that english was his second language and there was always communications issues.

So it was all good, he didn't throw super hard sparring so all good... Then the big push kick with the shoes come out follow by "Bro, you gotta take those off if you're gonna throw those"

Like running shoes? lol i dont want a shoe in my face. if he's walking outside after, all kinds of poop

if i had to do months of rehab and pt, followed by another injury in the same area, I'd get the hint and not throw kicks for awhile :p or switch stances and work on your opposite roundhouse (while trying not to injure it as well lol)

Like casual pumas or slip ons (whatever you want to call them). I think he only wore them in the gym though
