I just opened up r/BJJ. The top 10 links are:
  • Pic of someone getting their brown belt
  • Unfunny BJJ meme
  • Pic of someone meeting Marcelo
  • Unfunny non-BJJ video
  • Pic of someone getting their brown belt
  • Travel blog
  • Competition highlight
  • Pic of someone meeting Rickson
  • GIF of a random RNC in MMA fight
  • Link to BJJHQ rolling deals
That's basically a 20% ratio of relevant/interesting content to various bullshit. Reminds me why this is the best BJJ forum around!

Lol, the rage some people on the underground or reddit would have at the suggestion that a sherdog forum is higher quality and stays on topic more

To be fair a lot of Sherdog's reputation comes from the heavies

I've never understood why people claim one forum over another. I like grappling so I join every grappling forum I can find.

I understand each forums niche but for years F12 had the most varied and technical discussions. I've learned so much from this place over the last 14 years it's insane.

It's a shame that so many people have quit posting here. I think in general people no longer talk about grappling. They prefer to just post pics of their new stripe on their belt. I understand, everyone needs an outlet. But there is a lot of stuff worth discussing but it looks like the Instagram generation has moved beyond that.

I read both. Each have pros and cons.

The constant deluge of repeated newbie questions, stripe/belt promotions, and awful memes on r/bjj is just disgusting. But if you sift through that garbage there's good content about technique and discussions

Sherdog has a much better content-to-noise ratio, but its also not a very active forum, and I'm still not really a fan of the way it looks out operates after the update. I also like how a little bit of snark and trolling is tolerated. R/bjj feels like it's policed by a second grade teacher that wants everyone to be "nice"... Gotta be able to joke around some

This. r/BJJ has some awesome people posting on it, and some of the content is great too. But as the main BJJ subreddit (i.e. by default one of the main BJJ forums on the internet) I wish it were better. If I was mod there I'd just disallow memes, belt promotion and "guess who I met" threads, and maybe move them to a new /r/NewToBJJ subreddit.

Then again, maybe all subreddits suffer from this "lower common denominator" effect, and I'm only noticing it in r/BJJ because that's the topic I'm most familiar with…

Sound familiar?

f12 is the best. I just seem to have a lot of other things going on. I used to try to learn moves, but now I can barely keep up with what I am learning in class. I miss the old format and the stitch threads.

I like both, and they both have pros and cons imo.

Pretty much the case. Any discussion systems that use consensus/voting based mechanisms that sort opinions on the basis of popular approval will always be inferior to ones that don't.

*glances at the new like system*

And you have been a great contributor over the years I have been here. I was disappointed when you said you were going to stop coming here when they switched to the new format. Glad you still stop by.

Sometimes when it gets slow over here though I dissappear for a while, but I always seem to get back sooner or later because, IMO, it is better that the others out there. It would be great if we could get all the veterans back posting from over the years. Well maybe not all...

Speaking of veterans, what happened to Shemhazai?
