Explain like I'm 5 the difference between wrestling and grappling?

I do BJJ which means grapple, I tell people its like wrestling but with chokes and joint locks.

They then ask about punching, and I tell them no punching.

After that generally have a decent idea what it is I do.

Oh and I also tell them I do both the Karate Pyjama variety and the non karate pyjama variety.

Oh and I also call it Jitz sometimes. Bring it on bitches.!!!!

People have asked me as a long time MMA fan what the difference is before. I know it when I see it, but I can't really explain it. All I tell people is that all wrestling is grappling, but not all grappling is wrestling.

Wrestling, like BJJ, judo, sambo, shiao Jiao, sumo, is a type of grappling.

Its like asking what's the difference between English and language - English is one kind of language, wrestling is one kind of grappling.

Grappling, like BJJ, Judo, Sambo, Sumo, folk style, freestyle is a type of wrestling.

I believe that they are synomyms. The functional difference imposed within grappling circles is getting into the realm of jargon. Just explain the difference between specific sports, instead of trying to explain the nuances of the terminology.

I'm mostly on board with this, but then I think -- Are you saying Aikido is a kind of wrestling?

So then I go back to calling grappling the superset of wrestling.

wrestling (as it pertains to MMA) usually refers to the grappling style where the goal is to pin your opponent's shoulders to the mat, not submit as in BJJ or sub grappling.

If you use both words in a non-sport context, they're entirely interchangable. The distinction that we make between them is specific to our small subculture. In English at large, they're synonyms. To wrestle with something and to grapple with it have the same meaning. You can wrestle a bear without the rules of a wrestling sport (be it greco, freestyle, oil, jello, whatever). You can call that same bear-holding activity "bear grappling" without any change in meanig. On the less literal side, you can wrestle or grapple with your cough syrup addiction, and it doesn't matter which word you use. They mean the same thing, and there's no reason to expect someone that doesn't participate in our family of sports to conform to our fringe definitions.

Wrestling: "everything is forbiden unless explicitly allowed"

Submisssion grappling: "everything is allowed unless explicitly forbiden

Wrestling is a type of grappling. Like how a truck is a type of automobile.
Grappling is any sport, martial art, or aspect of hand-hand combat that involves controlling an opponent physically and excludes striking.

TS is English an L2 for you?

Mr A want to controle Mr B so that's wrestling.

Mr C want to controle Mr D but not just ''controle to controle''.
Mr C want to make boom boom on Mr D's face with his fist and the grappling was a set up to transition into better position.

You know. On some parts of the internet, "Making boom boom on Mr.D's face" would be interpreted very differently..

And to answer the topic.

All wrestling is grappling.

Not all grappling is wrestling.

I look at wrestling as a style of grappling with a set of rules. Freestyle, greco, folk etc.

I see grappling as any kind of combative sport or discipline that does not include strikes.

This is grappling

wrestling is the game of wrestling. Grappling is the reality on the ground (bjj)

Cain Velasquez would like a word with you.

You keep repeating this every chance you get. Still ridiculous.

Freestyle Wrestling is the reality in stand up grappling.
Fila Grappling and bjj or Gi Grappling is the reality in ground grappling.

So, when people are distinguishing grappling and wrestling, do the definitions include all kinds of wrestling? Greco, freestyle, folkstyle, collar-and-jacket, submission, catch, pro, backyard, masked, arm, oil, mud, thumb?

And where do grappling hooks play in?

People called some sports "wrestling" and some sports "grappling" not because of some fundamental difference between the two, but because those were just the respective terms that were being used at those places and times.

So epee, then. And mounted archery.
