People have asked me as a long time MMA fan what the difference is before. I know it when I see it, but I can't really explain it. All I tell people is that all wrestling is grappling, but not all grappling is wrestling.

What's the difference between having sex and making love?

Wrestling is a martial art.

Grappling is harder to define actually. Maybe a part of fighting without strikes or something

Pretty much sums it up. Wrestling is a subset of rules within grappling which favours takedowns, control and pins, while grappling overall encompasses takedowns, throws, pins, submissions, sweeps etc and can be done in a gi or in no gi.

Wrestlers wear onesies. Submission grapplers where board shorts and a skin. BJJ guys wear gi's or a skin and board shorts.

Those are the three predominant forms of grappling used in MMA circles but there are also a wide variety of different rulesets and arts. Judo. Aikido, TJJ/JJJ, Chidoaba and Turkish oil wrestling (a real sport where the competitors wear leather pants, cover themselves in olive oil and wrestle with the primary objective of the match being to stuff you hand down the other guys leather pants. I am not kidding. Real Sport)

What you see in MMA isn't exactly wrestling though is it? Submissions are allowed in MMA. What you see in the cage is grappling.

"grappling" to "wrestling" is what "sports with a ball" is to "basketball".

just a broader term.

Mr A want to controle Mr B so that's wrestling.

Mr C want to controle Mr D but not just ''controle to controle''.
Mr C want to make boom boom on Mr D's face with his fist and the grappling was a set up to transition into better position.

Wrestling is a type of grappling. Like how a truck is a type of automobile.
Grappling is any sport, martial art, or aspect of hand-hand combat that involves controlling an opponent physically and excludes striking.

ok, problem is these terms can be used as specific sports (like olympic wrestling or submission grappling) or as broad terms of body combat...

but to be specific, I would say wrestling involves takind down the opponent and pinning him. with limited ground fighting and no submission. grappling would include the submissions and would have more ground fighting.

IMO, this would be the best way to separate the two terms...

All wrestling is grappling, not all grappling is wrestling.
Likewise, all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises.

Grappling, broadly would include all disciplines of wrestling with a more open rule set to allow for submissions.

When i choke my wife while having sex......grappling?

Wrestling is a specific type of grappling. Grappling is a broader term than wrestling, even though there are many styles and types within wrestling.

Wrestling is a sub category within the field of grappling.

A square is a specific type of rectangle, but a rectangle is not always square.

Karate is a martial art but not all martial arts are karate.

Now change out the words "karate" and "martial arts" with the words "wrestling" and "grappling".

Grappling is the subset of actions in a hand to hand fight, where you try do control, dominate and submit your opponent without strikes.

Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling technics.

English is not my main language.
