When I am on my back in 1/2 guard and my opponent goes for the ezekiel what is my defense? Coming from no gi I was always taught to turn my face into my opponent however this leaves my neck exposed.

No can defend.

Seriously though. Try putting your hand up to keep their hand from coming across your neck. Sometimes I just grab their hand or fist as it is coming across to keep it away.

Push their elbow that's not attached to the arm behind your neck up if it's on your chin / in deep

super easy to defend before its locked in. once its locked in?? tapping prob the best defense.

To Defend Ezequiel basically grab his head and pull it towards you.

To choke you he need after secure the grip and push the hand into your neck and to have the leverage to do that he need to get space .

Its more effective as defense if when you hug his head, his choking arm is inside your grip too.
Basically is like you get a Head and arm controll (like when you do on top of side mount) but from the bottom, with also the choking forearm inside this grip.

Same if he do the Ezequiel from the back (Like Rodolfo Viera Do), just try to turn and grab his head and pull the head as close to you as possible.

He cannot choke then.

Keep the under hook and hug?

Ezekiel is a choke from Judo (Sode Guruma) made famous in bjj by brazilian judoka Ezequiel Paraguassu, that used against many bjj guy.

Sode Guruma come from word SODE = sleeve , GURUMA = wheel. Basically you choke grabbing the sleeve and doing a rotation motion with the free hand pushing on the neck (and then grabbing at the end of the rotation the other sleeves to close the choke).

If you hug that way you block his Rotation so it doesn't choke anymore even if he has the hand in place.

Pin the arm down under your head/neck and push up under his chin. They either loosen up or tap.

Block the choke, hard sweep attempt so they let go. Or if they don't let go, you get the sweep.

Chin down, hands up to block the hand coming across. Like most submissions it's easy to defend when you know it's coming, not so easy when it's chained with other stuff and comes on sneaky.

Are you talking about when he already has the forearms in place on either side of your neck? Because in that case, as the saying goes, YFUALTA. If he's in half-guard and able to move both of his arms freely without any opposition from you on either one, you should be in the process of sweeping him or regaining guard.
