Anyone check this show out yet? I'm a sucker for 90's nostalgia, and the first 30 seconds of this just nails it perfectly. Feels a lot like Freaks and Geeks, but a little more innocent since the cast is younger. The acting is pretty solid for most of the cast, which goes well with some touching moments. The tone feels nostalgic on top of the setting, which goes well together. I'm definitely looking forward to the next season, but there's one thing that holds me back on this season and instead of I 9/10, I have to give it a 7.5/10.

Seems like 80% of the season was about the girl being a lesbian. I get that it was harder back then to come out, but that plot basically dominated the show. Which is a shame because the two main girls are the weakest actors and their plot is terrible, the rest of the cast is interesting and there's got to be more material for their own stories. They didn't earn that romance at all, they have nothing in common and the character did a 180. I expect the boyfriend to come back next season and the blonde chick to show her true colors, but the show felt way too agenda driven than it needed to be. It's not the gay thing that bothers me, it's that it ultimately felt agenda driven and lazy. I expect season 2 to be much better.

My roommate watched it and I caught a few episodes, seemed a lot like Degrassi.

I thought I was visiting another thread about depression..

I'm a few episodes in and this show kind of sucks. I was looking forward to it as I graduated High school in 1998 and thought it would be a fun piece of nostalgia.

I think they were trying to go for a freaks and geeks kind of feel, but it's not working. For one thing the Alpha group of kids are the drama club and the younger nerdy kids are in the AV club. I don't know how it is now, but the drama kids were the furthest thing from an alpha social group when I was in high school.

The show is watchable, but so far it's coming off as your typical socially engineered show of the 2010's with 90's make up on it. Here is the trailer if anybody is interested.

On a side note the kid with the dark longer hair and glasses looks like Roxanne Modafferi

its what to expect, theres no high school movies that are realistic, all that comes to mind are Kids and the TV show the inbetweeners (UK version)

I went to high school in the 90's, and I'd be surprised if any modern-era TV show would come close to capturing the level of racism, homophobia, and sexual stuff from the average 90's high school. 'Locker room talk' was much more acceptable then. Kids would casually greet each other 'whatup f@g!'. Everyone would use words like 'gay' in a pejorative way. Dudes would grab chicks' asses and tits, etc. Kids are kids though, so I wonder if anything has really changed. Gay stuff is more accepted, so the pejorative 'gay' and 'f@g' stuff is probably equivalent to a hate crime.
sounds like the taboo homosexual stuff left quite a lasting impact on you.

Nah, I'd say it's fairly realistic.

Yeah they allude to gay bashing while barely showing it at all. It's one of the weakest aspects of the show for the story they're telling. There's not been any racism at all but I don't remember it being too bad, though I always chalked up the racism I did see at that time to being in the south.

I think an 80s HS be totally more radd dude

Sheeit, we damn near had that with Freaks and Geeks but only getting one season meant we're stuck with only 1980. First season of Freaks and Geeks crushes this show so far but I think it'll only get better and could hold up as a whole by the end.

Well shit, the show got cancelled. To be fair, it was pretty shitty in hindsight but I think it had potential and the second season could have been a lot better than the first. They put too many eggs in one basket expecting another season, ultimately it ended up being incredibly pointless. It's a real shame though, it really could have been good.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time: just start at about 40 seconds and skip the intro

I watched it after I had my tonsillectomy. I was binge watching a lot of things since I couldn't do shit. I probably wouldn't have continued it if it wasn't for that. My wife tapped out on it after a few episodes.
