"Russell Moore, now the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, explained in a Tuesday interview with NPR that partisan tribalism in the US is infecting the evangelical movement and that he is alarmed at the number of self-professed Christians who believe the Bible and its teachings are “subversive.”

Moore told “All Things Considered” host Scott Detrow that his moment of clarity “was the result of having multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching — ‘turn the other cheek’ — to have someone come up after to say, ‘Where did you get those liberal talking points?’

“And what was alarming to me,” Moore went on, “is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, ‘I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would not be, ‘I apologize.’ The response would be ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.’ And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we’re in a crisis.”

Jesus wasn't just a liberal.. the dude was straight up socialist.

Conservative Christians deluding themselves into thinking he'd be on their side is peak cognitive dissonance

His opinion and I think in some things he was a "liberal "

However in most he was very "conservative".

Starting with.

Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished” (Matthew 5:17–19).

Say that and his preaching the old testament.

"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. (Lev. 20:13, ESV)"

The old testament address a lot of the issues and Jesus stated that he did not come to change those laws.

That said worship the way you want as Christianity has evolved and split over time. If you believe gay marriage is not a sin you can find church's that believe that. If you think it is then go to a church that believes that.

However the argument that Jesus would be a modern liberal is bullshit and a very poor argument. You can make an argument for some modern liberal ideas he would have supported but over all he would be a modern liberals nightmare.

Jesus was in no way comparable to a modern liberal. He had 0 liberalism in him. In fact modern day conservatives and Christians are significantly more liberal than Jesus was. Jesus embraced and taught the entire Law of Moses, the most extreme conservative way of life possible. Most Christian Conservatives today openly reject the OT Law and consider it oppressive.

Liberals and Christian Conservatives alike don't know Jesus and don't know the Bible.

Lol at singling out the one anti-gay passage in the Old Testament and attempting to tie it back to Jesus. Is that the only passage you read? Jesus essentially rewrote the entirety of the Torah. Its not even the same religion.

I don’t think he’d be a liberal’s nightmare at all. He’d be at odds with the modern evangelical movement, which have ‘Pharisee’ written all over them.

Dude had nothing whatsoever to say about abortion or homosexuality, although both existed in his time.

Leviticus, btw, was meant for priests and there’s no consensus on whether that text was applicable to anyone else.

Zero liberalism??
—Blessed are the poor?
—What you do to the least of these, you do to me?

Remember that time the multitudes were hungry, and only had a couple loaves of bread and a couple fish—and Jesus told them to stop whining and go get a job? Lol me neither.

Jesus certainly wasn’t strict on the Law: he defended an adulteress from being stoned (which the Law commanded), and healing a man on the Sabbath. Those seem like pretty liberal interpretations of the Law to me.

Dude, Jesus *was* a refugee lol. The book of Matthew tells us that King Herod ordered all children under the age of 2, to be killed. Joseph and Mary took Jesus and fled to Egypt for safety. Imagine if they got to the border and someone like Trump or DeSantis had been in charge. We might have had a very different Jesus story.

He was also poor, and homeless. All groups of people that republicans shit on daily.

"Borders". Do you know anything about the time period?

While Jesus may not have specifically refuted one of the Laws he did in fact turn from at least one. Specifically stoning for adultery. He did not say it was no longer valid but he did challenge the mob on their moral superiority to be the able to inflict the punishment. He did this because he knew the hypocrisy of the sinful and imperfect passing judgement on and condemning the same in the name of religious sanctity.
