Sumo Eternal Sumo thread - Currently July 2025 Tournament in Nagoya

Onosato won twice and didn't look happy.

But if I'm not mistaken, kotoshoho fights twice almost everyday this basho. Could someone explain why he has to meet 2 opponents consecutively?

It's probably his almost identical brother who's now also in the first division :)

Damn these Yokozuna debut bashos are brutal. Onosato is having a hard time with guys moving sideways. He's a dai yokozuna moving forward and a Maegashira 15 moving backwards or sideways. He has to fix this.

Looks like it's a new record for giving a kinboshi - the lowest Maegashira to ever get one was a M14, as of 30 minutes ago it's a M15 - Kotoshoho.

Kusano and Kotoshoho completely destroyed Aonishiki and Kirishima, the latter which i consider a lot better than the former. Interesting basho, i have no clue who will win, but it's not anyone from the upper echelons.

Surprising winner - Kotoshoho! who would have predicted this?

Also, i think there's 5 people with the jun-yusho - Onosato, Atamifuji, Aonishiki, Kusano and Tamawashi.

NHk English commentator says 10-5 in September will promote Wakatakakage to ozeki. He's probably indirectly referring to kisenosato (10-5,12-3,10-5) but 11-4 would be safe. Wakatakakage definitely deserves it and should've done it sooner (when the competition was a bit less severe).

it was thought a matter of time till Asanoyama regains the second highest status. While he was isolated from the top division reality, half dozen of new rikishis have become his threat. Onosato, takerufuji, hakuoho, aonishiki, kusano, onokatsu and occasionally unlocked shodai. Can he even get back to sanyaku? I wonder.

Wakatakepromotionkage? IDK He has 31 wins over 3 basho but maybe they want a more consistent Ozeki than Kotozakura who has a 5 - 10 and three 8-7 in a row this year

I don't know how far Asanoyama will go, honestly. I don't see him making Ozeki ever again. Maybe Komusubi

Sadly, i think Asanoyama's time might have gone. As he was, he was obviously knocking on the door to Yokozuna, but now, after all the delays, injuries, absence from high level competition, i dunno. He shouldn't have had any loss on his way to juryo. i doubt Asanoyama of 2020 would have had any.

What’s the best way to watch? I’ve been watching a YouTube channel that uploads same day a couple hours after each day and it seems to just use the same audio per day but it’s in Japanese so I can’t really tell or know lol. It’s been reliable enough and easy to follow but just wondering if there’s something more legitimate/better. I don’t mind watching a bit delayed since timezones but just want to have something consistent for each event

Ended up watching the first week and then got busy and just watched the last 2-3 days. Fun stuff and hoping to continue getting into it. Still don’t really know much about sumo but I do like to pretend I lnow what’s going on with my previous wrestling/BJJ experience lol
