Have you ever seen anyone do this before? Enson Inoue announces he is no longer a black belt.

“I know this journey will be long and hard and I want to be real. This is no bullshit nor is it a joke but I’m going to demote myself to purple belt.
I got a black belt 18 years ago and as we all know BJJ is always evolving. I jumped off the BJJ bandwagon 10 years ago and it has pulled far far ahead.
I did the Purebred beginning class again today and again ALL the moves were new to me. Also my body has stiffened so much that I couldn’t even move fluidly.
At the time I got promoted to black belt I was a black belt at that time. However, what BJJ has become I can honestly say I am NOT a black belt. Yeah it’s cool to be a black belt but to me a true black belt should be technically and spiritually sound. I feel confident spiritually but not technically.
A black belt is not about status but about respecting the art of BJJ and for me to put a black belt on would be disrespecting the sport.
So I’m officially a purple belt and this is where my journey back to BJJ will continue."
 
Enson is universally revered in mma due to his honesty,attitude and his status as a trailblazer. It takes a huge amount of humility to state openly that not only has the game passed you by but your now relinquishing black belt something you have held onto for years . Enson could honestly have went on the lecture seminar circuit and made some good money using his status as blackbelt and a legend. Nothing but respect for that.
 
Interesting take from Enson Inoue. Great to hear he is training BJJ once again.

Honestly..he's also a bit of an attention seeker....just my opinion.
 
Didn't something like this happen in the Gracie clan years ago?

I remember something about a bjj black belt being away for a while and when he returned, he felt so out of touch, he switched belts with a student of his who had progressed.

Still, lots of respect for Enson keeping it real.

seems probable. If you look at the way the Gracie family members moved on the ground and compared it to how Maia and Jacare move, i think it's not hard to imagine.
 
I hespect that so much. There are a lot of "black belts" out there who were gifted their black and are really at the level of a good purple belt in terms of pure technique and understanding of leverage. I started training BJJ in 2006 and only got my purple belt in 2014 and Im still a purple belt with no stripes. I love the journey and dont care how long it takes. I know when I get my black belch it will be well earned.
 
100% respect to Enson. I really wish i can have the chance to meet this dude. What a class act.
