I'm British and it has never registered with me that we use the same term for two different things.

If I were eating an English muffin, I would almost exclusively be in Maccy D's or eating eggs Benny.

If I hear somebody say muffin, I would assume they were talking about American style sweet muffins.

I'm a fan of both. Just melted butter though. Never made a sandwich with them.
