Did anyone think these two movies were the same back in the day?
I'm talking about an era before smartphones.

These 2 films shared identical poster designs and were released within the same year.
Both films even have identical elements and the plot is nearly the same.

- guy runs in slow motion while things explode behind him.
- snipers
- serious dudes speaking really bad english
- war
- playing a game of cat & mouse
- playing a game of insect & bird
- fighter pilots
- flyjng debris

Don't tell me when you had HBO in your basement that you didn't think these two films were the exact same movie.
You would always see one of these two names always listed in the TV guide without a film cover (name only).

How many times did you call this Behind Enemy Gates?

Enemy at the Gates was based off a Russian sniper that actually existed in WW2 and Behind Enemy Lines was fiction based of one of the central Euro conflicts in more modern times but with an American protagonist.

Aside from Hollywood war movies and having the word "Enemy" in the title...

Behind Enemy Lines was loosely based on Scott O'Grady's shootdown. Knew a few Marines that were involved with his rescue.

Behind Enemy Lines is fun if you turn your brain off. The helos showing up and just shredding people with machine gun fire was badass.

No but I was well aware of who Owen Wilson was and always thought it was weird for him to do an action movie. So it stood out to me more.

Enemy at the gates is a better film, although I don’t know how historically accurate it was. I doubt Vasili Zaytsev and Erwin König ever met on the battlefield. But it at least shows the importance of the battle for Stalingrad on the eastern front. The love story however felt unnecessary.

Enemy at the gates is the superior movie by far.

I think you got the synopsis wrong of behind Behind Enemy Lines. It is about a bunch of Serbians trying to do the world a service by killing Owen Wilson and his stupid nose. The movie ends in failure, which I guess is the moral of the story. Wanting something badly like to kill Owen Wilson is sometimes not enough and you just have to learn to live in an imperfect world. A very Shakespearean movie if I should say so myself.

I used to mix them up but Enemy at the gates is far superior.

Gates hands down.

BEL was a flick

Floating heads in burnished gold was standard for loads of film posters back then.

This is what happens when the good guys lose.

The love story was completely fabrication. The real events were sufficient on their own to make a great film. But it's the movies, so you have to give sone artistic liberties.

I beleive the film does allude to how Koenig was really bested, though. IIRC Vasili kept finding unique-looking cigarettes in a certain area, and was somehow able to deduce it was Koenig, so he set a trap for him there.

Enemy at The Gates put me to sleep.

Behind Enemy Lines all the way.
