Tech End of Windows 10 Support - Do I really need a new computer?

Security updates are the only real concern. I wouldn't do anything "sensitive" on an unsupported OS. That means you shouldn't be logging into ANY accounts that you aren't okay with being hacked.
So I can't login to my online bank unless I upgrade to Windows 11? Is that you Bill Gates?

Or switch to Linux.
Mint looks a lot like Windows.
And its one of the easiest linux to use
I may have to check it out, one of my buddies has used Linux the last fifteen years and he seems to really love it. And it seems like Linux has become a lot more user friendly.

Mint impressed me at bit.
I brought an old laptop to work that runs Mint, for a project.
As soon as I connected it to the wifi it installed all the printers automatically.
In windows I have to install them manually.

But Mint is nice, its the more user friendly version of Linux.
I am told the Linux nerds laugh at people who use it.
But for me running on older machines for streaming/movie/internet/emails.. its really good enough and yeah it looks a lot like Windows

I had a similar experience with something on iPad or iPhone where an app update was available but I didn't see or notice anything saying the update doesn't work on old device, so you are fooked.

switch to linux and it also gives you this magic power of compelling you to tell everyone that you use linux.

its not 1999 anymore. You don't really need to use the command terminal unless you just want to, in order to feel like you're the mission control guy in the latest matrix infiltration mission.

most windows software just works on it natively except certain exceptions and if it doesnt work.. the developers literally went out of their way to intentionally make it not work and in that case... FUCk them and their app anyway.

You can enroll for extended security updates until October 2026 if you want

I've been using Mint as my daily driver for years now and it really is the Windows version of Linux as everything just works out of the box. I used to use Debian but it required a little more command line administration and fiddling to get software and hardware set up properly.

I tried to enroll in the extended security updates and it keeps saying "It doesn't look like your connected to the internet. Check your connection and try again." I've tried running the troubleshooter on my internet connection (which is working fine) and windows updates (which detected an error that was apparently fixed) and the issue persists.

EDIT: Tried restarting Windows and still no dice. It seems I'm not the only one with this problem:

I for one run Debian GNU/Linux with KDE Desktop on my PC's and have Windows in a virtual machine for apps I can't find for Linux. Windows has turned into spyware IMO.

yeah you'll find out it won't work when you attempt to install the update on an older iPad/iPhone and you'll be greeted with an error message instead.

Score another win for EU consumers. On Wednesday Microsoft backtracked on the strings it had attached to Windows 10's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. However, it only did so in the European Economic Area (EEA), following complaints from an advocacy group. The elephant in the room? The EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) safeguards against unlawful bundling and restricting consumer choice. Had the company not relented, those regulations could have spawned investigations and hefty fines.

"In the European Economic Area, we’re making updates to the enrolment process to ensure it meets local expectations and delivers a secure, streamlined experience," a Microsoft spokesperson told Windows Central. "Our goal is to support customers and provide them with options as they transition to Windows 11, with uninterrupted access to critical security updates."

LOL, what a joke.

Now do phones.

Why isn't the US of A government protecting us from Microsoft's greed like Europe is protecting the Europeans?

Out of curiosity, how many years do you think Microsoft should be forced to support Windows 10?

Until it has zero vulnerabilities.

What's to stop them from pursuing more profits by getting everyone to dump their current computers into landfill for Windows 12?

Anyway, I was ready to do the enroll in the 1 yr continued updates and it said I already backed up my windows settings, so no charge. I'm pretty sure I don't use One Drive or whatever it's called.

Nothing ever has zero vulnerabilities. Windows 10 has been around for a decade at this point, it's not unreasonable for Microsoft to move on now, particularly since OS refreshes matter more to enterprise.

What's stopping from immediately rolling to Windows 12 is businesses usually buy computers every 5 years, there's not much juice to squeeze from forcing OS updates every other years.

For whatever it's worth, moving to Windows 11 does improve security a lot vs 10 due to the TPM requirement.

Seemed to have gotten Windows 11 successfully on other computer and took maybe 5 or 6 hours to download and install. It wasn't slow internet, but disk resource use was at 100% while internet use was 0%.

I'm old enough to remember existing software no longer working, printer no longer working after Windows updates. That's part of the anxiety of upgrading the OS. Even the f'ing tray button icons I need to get used to because they changed those. I could have swore an older Windows let you change the icon and select from others available.

Couldn't find where to disable Co-Pilot. I think I deleted/uninstalled it when it appeared in Windows 10.

Is it nothing has zero vulnerabilities because the various world governments force them to put in backdoors that eventually get leaked into the hands of criminals?

no it's because computers are too complex for the programmers to fully understand them

Purchased my computer from Costco in December, 2016. Still runs great. It runs Windows 10 and isn't compatible to upgrade to Windows 11 although ChatGPT says I can do an official Microsoft-supported bypass method so I can install Windows 11 on my i7-6700 PC even though it’s “unsupported.”. Windows 10 support ends soon. Do I really need to buy a new computer or is this just a money grab by Microsoft? I only use the computer for a few websites (no bad sites), email, and online banking. No games. I use Bitdefender Total Security. I was able to enroll in extended security updates until October 13, 2026 for free.

Do I really need to buy a new computer now or after extended support ends on October 13, 2026? Or can I just keep using mine safely until the HD fails? Here are the specs:

HP - OMEN by HP Desktop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 - 256GB Solid State Drive + 2TB Hard Drive - Gun metal/Jack black/Brushed aluminum front panel
  • Model: 870-080

yes you do
