Education Requirements for UFC Fighters?

Like the title says..how would you feel about requiring UFC fighters to have a GED or HS Diploma, and an equivalent for fighters born out of the US? This sort of requirement isn't unheard in professional sports.

What sport is this required in?

In most countries having a degree, or just the opportunity to have one, has a lot to do with a persons Socioeconomic status.

Making that a requirement will just be discriminating (Along with other reasons why it's a bad idea).

This exactly. You have guys from literally all around the world with every kind of background, socially and economically.

We don't need educational requirements for beauty pageants. We don't need educational requirements for anything period. We need a world full of people who can do things, not people with just a paper that says they can probably do that thing.

Fucking retarded, that would be the equivalent of having academics needing a blue belt in martial arts to debate. this is the stupidest shit I have read on here in months. :icon_neut

NFL = 3 years removed beyond your final year in HS with a HS diploma or GED/or completion of Junior year in college

NBA = 1 year removed from your final year in HS with a HS diploma or GED/or at least completion of Freshman year in College.

MLB = At least a HS Diploma or GED

Major sports in the US do have educational requirements.

Thanks. I didn't know that. I have to say I find it ridiculous.

EDIT: Oops, I just read the next post. Seems like its not that clear as you described it

How about a base education requirement for people to make threads...now GTFO

Some fighters don't have the choice to get a education, Diego Brandao couldn't go to school because he had to take care of his mother in Brazil and he was to poor. So I think it wouldn't be a good idea since some fighters don't even have a choice to even if they wanted to.

There are so many reasons why this is a stupid idea that I haven't got time to list them.

What a relief.

Now I can start a thread without ever worrying about it containing the stupidest idea ever.

Thanks TS

I think it's in the fighters best interests to actually have an education but I don't see how the UFC should have anything to do with it

If you're not smart enough to read contracts and/or make proper decisions (and not say stupid shit during interviews or on twitter etc), then it's your fault

Common sense is more a necessity than book smarts in their cases

I also think there should be a religious requirement for fighters, they have to attend church every other Sunday minimum. Oh and they need to do community service at least once a week and have at least 3 extra curricular activities. Additionally, they need to play a musical instrument and own at least 1 pet.

Why stop at one completely irrelevant criteria?

Never would I think that Geometry would qualify you for getting punched in the face.. Thank you TS, you are a gift to Sherdog.

That would just deprive us of exciting fighters who don't have access to education.

Being that the fighters come from far different backgrounds, trying to impose a blanket educational requirement for them to fight would not work.

That being said, I would like to see the UFC offer some kind of educational assistance benefit for their fighters where they can attend classes if they choose, paid for by the company. That way, once their fighting careers are over, they have something to fall back on.
