Who needs his Pro gay secular stuff if the whole country will be alienated and there will be millions un employed after the investors pull out.

Thanks,

There are actually talks of a coup against Duterte in the event that he wins the Presidency decides to create a revolutionary government but it could get really ugly he has so many supporters specially among the youth.

There could be lynch mobs, riots etc, his supporters could be watching this thread now and will hunt me down..

A coup? because cleaning up the political system is just too much work for the corrupt elite right?

If they feared Duterte so much they could had you know, made a real separation of powers, create a strong judiciary (so that there is no need to vigilantism), transparency and a real checks and balances against corruption.

But alas, they hoped that Duterte craziness would die and they would go back to stealing.

True, but he seems to have huge national support. To be honest, your elections seem very cumbersome - I whole lot of moving pieces and change over happening.

I like the stories of him leading the kill orders on drug dealers but building rehab centers for addicts. And making the tourist swallow his cigarette butt because he didn't follow your no smoking ordinance in a bar was pretty funny.

Sorry to hear about your economy but I'm kind of surprised to hear how left of center some of his policies are.

^^ Son of Ferdinand Marcos, the dictator who ruled the Philippines from 1965-1986 and looted $10 billion from foreign aid, tax reserves, and debt borrowings. Refusing to acknowledge your family's history of plundering and believing that your father's dictatorship was a wonderful time for the country will not prevent you from running political office in the Philippines. In fact, it will only boost your popularity, as surveys showed that BBM was the most favoured to become the next vice-president.

@ShinkanPo

Who is this "BBM" candidate that everyone seems to hate?

Son of Former Press. and Dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Unfortunately Filipino seems to have a short memmory and politics here base so much in personalities you have comedians,actors/actreses in the senate even if they have no college degree and extremely ignorant about public administration.

I once visited the Imelda Marcos museum in Tacloban (before Yolanda). The lack of critical distance and the bewilderment in light of my semi-critical questions confused me at first. Later it became clearer to me when we were at a nice beach and I saw an island a few hundred meters away. It still belonged to the Marcos family. They still are rich, influential and powerful.

I hear a lot about "short memories", but there gotta be other reasons why Filipinos are welcoming a self-proclaimed dictator for President and a son of another dictator for VP.

Perhaps that's the totalitarian government they crave, if that means Order will be established by force. I've been to quite a few Asian countries, so I'm all too familiar with the fact that some folks would rather choose to be sheeps under a strong shepherd with a big stick rather than humans with free will in a society where other humans don't give a damn about law and order.

Here's the billion dollar question: is "Duterte Harry" the Filipino Lee Kwan Yew?

Before transitioning to Democracy, Singapore thrived under an one-of-a-kind benevolent dictator who TRULY cared for his country and dedicated his entire life to build his country from the ground up, and it quickly became the role-model it is today for their neighbors. It's just too damn bad that the Philippines are doing it backwards, and I seriously doubt Commie Duterte is Lee Kwan Yew reincarnated.

Thats what bothers me it seems lots of Filipinos really wants a dictator they want put their trust so much to a single person.

While other countries are getting rid of dictators here I see people on social media calling for one.

Before transitioning to Democracy, Singapore thrived under a benevolent dictator who truly cared for his country, and it quickly became the role-model it is today for their neighbors. It's just too damn bad that the Philippines are doing it backwards.

Examples of fruitful dictatorships are few and far between. In fact, the only autocratic states in recent history that have been successful in spurning lasting economic growth have been Confucian ones; Singapore, South Korea, and China. These are nations whose people were practically born with discipline, such is the inherent strictness of Confucian culture. Filipinos are not like their East Asian counterparts. There are literally dozens of other examples in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America where supposedly benevolent dictators ran their countries to the ground.

The Philippines has more hope of turning into the next Venezuela with the empowerment of a far-left, anti-US, China-and-communist loving 'benevolent' dictator than the next Singapore. At least the next VP will probably not be Marcos Jr. given the current vote tabulations, but rather the Aquino and Roxas-supported Leni Robredo. Hopefully she can balance out some of Duterte's insanity.

Sounds like a Stalinist to me.

And the Philippines has been the US's complete and total bitch for well over 100 years. It makes sense that there'll be anti-Western sentiments. Sucks that it expresses itself in this fucking lunatic.

Its short memories because the median age of the philippines is 23 years old, half the country wasnt even born by the time Marcos was ousted.

Short memories have nothing to do with it. I didn't have to be born in the 1920s to know that Hitler was a terrible man.

It's pure ignorance and a sorrow lack of education that explains the misguidedness among Filipino voters. Also, Filipinos are pound-for-pound the most forgiving and forgetting bunch in the world.

I dated a girl with a Filipino dad, like from the Philippines, super successful dude and really nice guy, but i can totally see this Duterte dude appealing to him and his family. He would always talk about the state of the Philippines and having to take supplies to them because his family back there didnt have as much, except for their country land. Duterte and his politics really speaks to the people "the have nots", not the others or the "haves".

"Memories" shouldn't matter if people have a High School education and at least a mom or a dad to teach them about their own country's recent history. And this isn't some kind of long-lost ancient knowledge: the Philippines left their Dictatorship behind barely a generation ago, just like ALL democracies in East/South East Asia.

Half of Germany wasn't born by the time Hitler stuck a gun in his own mouth, but no matter how bad it gets in Europe, I just can't see Germans voting for another Nazi to be their Chancellor.

Nor can I see any other Asian democracies to happily throw their hard-fought Liberty away and crown another Dictator in Chief.

That tells me this has nothing to do with "memories". The Filipinos knows EXACTLY what they're giving up since the guy isn't actually hiding his intentions (including dissolving Congress), and yet they're cheering and applauding while jumping down the cliff together like lemmings anyway. This shit is truly mind-boggling.

May be that's it: because the U.S' containment policies successfully kept the domino pieces from falling in South East Asia after Vietnam, the Philippines don't actually know what it's like to suffer under Communism, so now they want a taste of Stalin to see if it's better than what they currently have!

Democrats are freaking out that Donald Trump is as popular as he is, but Americans knows no matter what happen in November, in 4 years we'll get to vote again. If young & stupid Filipinos aren't careful, this just might be the last free election they'd get in their lifetime.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm not the only one to quote Queen Padmé Amidala while discussing Filipino politics. Surely there are plenty of people in Manila who have seen the movie and familiar with the concept of Life immitates Art.

Because Hitler lost the war.

Germany is also not facing the same issues that philippines are facing which is a lack of government, people dont remember what it is to live under a dictatorship, so they dont realize how hard is to get out of one.

But its not only the small uneducated individuals its also the politicians, if a president can single handledly destroy a democracy, then its not really a true democracy.

Yes this is the commie guy I have been talking about,

Election day today

Seriously I am really scared for the future of my country if this man is elected to actually make me lose sleep last night knowing that the next day could the start of a pointless revolution.

If this guy wins it could be a disaster he is Anti-American he is willing to make deals with the Chinese and he wants to ban the use of computers for the National police as he believes computers are evil and his supporters the Dutertards or let say the DuterTurds agreed with him some even saying that the Philippines should not rely on technology like computers since these are "western inventions" and that its bad for Nationalism.

I bet this Duterte guy wants a controlled internet in the future here like in China.

He may seem a good choice because of his stance against criminality but he is just making that all up to hide his dictatorial ambitions, the people love him because they think he is a bad ass for killing criminals as you know criminality is in all time high in the Philippines, there is currently a serial rapist going around carjacking cab drivers and using the cab later to pick up women and rape them, criminals are even working at the airport planting shit on unsuspecting tourist and then extorting them and the current administration has done nothing and even played down the mess.

This is why the People think Duterte is the man to do the Job but what many Filipinos don't know is Duterte is probably a Chinese communist agent, and I think a lot of the urban poor does not even know what communism means.

His supporters also has a false sense of Nationalism they think the Philippine allegiance to the United States is a cause for shame they want US forces out of the country they think it infringes the sovereignty of the country, what they don't know is in the event the Philippines becomes a communist anti US state, we are going to sink fast into a hell hole and end up like some Venezuela or worst.

This people don't want to use their brains they think that a country can stand alone they don't realize that by removing the status quo things good get really bad there will be millions of unemployed foreign trade will stop etc.

This guy is a jack ass, he said he will removed the congress or even the senate and create a "revolutionary government"

Oh this creep even made a joke about the rape and murder of an Australian missionary.

Philippine Presidential Candidate Criticized For Rape 'Joke'

The comparison is unfair for Trump Duterte is a buffoon.

He is the type that will just execute his political opponents, If I was not able to post starting July this year you know that the Philippines has turned into complete shit hole of the 4th world kind we tare probably back to the stone age.

I highly doubt he is a communist agent. Socialist to an extent, yes and that's something Philippines needs badly, social programs like there were in the past before corruption put an end to that.

As for the tough on crime policy, I'm all for it. It worked in Davao, and that city has the first 911 emergency call system in the country. As for crime, the meth problem needs to be taken care of, like in Pasil, Cebu. The street I lived on was the meth hub of the whole city. Maybe Duterte will finally clean up that shit and turn the country around again.
