I remember the moment of that Khabib gif was in the second round i think. Thought for a moment he could get the W my heart was pounding . This is a quality post OP . (i still think connor runs over him in the rematch)

I think a good portion of them favoring McGregor comes from how handily he beat Poirier in the past...

Should be more competitive this go around, but I still feel Poirier style plays right into McGregor’s hands.

Alot of dope gifs itt, however Mcgregor is the better boxer. Better defense, throws tighter punches, better counters, better going forward and backwards, better timing. Dustin has the heart of a champion and may have faster hands.

I think by MMA standards Poiriers boxing is like 9 and Conor's is a 10. I still would favor Conor, he's just a bit better even though Poirier is ahead of everyone else.

2 southpaws. CM will attempt the leg kick early. DP should go after the calf kick fast and hard and beat the legs down as much as possible. Attack CMs body with the liver kick over and over and try to kick that left arm. Go for TDs and hang on CM to tire him. DP isnt mentally unstable as Cerrone in the big fights. Attack the body, then pull a JJones high high.

Agreed. Way extended on many of those combos. I think Dustin's best chance of winning is on the ground in the later rounds.

Should be a fun scrap while it lasts[/QUOTE]
Lots of holes in those gifs where Connor can counter. I want Dustin to win but these gifs add to my doubts.

Conor is arguably the best 2 round striker in the sports history

He has such confidence in his striking and such a fast starter

This will be a repeat of the first fight. Perhaps dustin lasts a round but that's it

Dustin is a great fighter, but imagine that was conor instead of hooker in his last fight? He has solid boxing, but he's there to be hit and it's not like he hasn't been stopped b4

Conor all day every day and twice on sunday
Getting outboxed by Nate (damn near KO'd in their first fight) in the 2nd round of both their fights does not make one the best 2 round striker in the sports history.

Hell, didn't Khabib drop him in the second round?

Nah i'll give that to Crocop, Aldo, Rumble, prime Guillard, Manhoef or someone like that.

I'm more of a poirer fan but I'm leaning to mcgregor. Poirer is better in the pocket IMO but conor manages distance much better and is pretty quick. If poirer fights smart and fight defensively for the first couple rounds he does have a solid shot at this.

There is something rigid and inflexible about Poirier's whole stance, whereas Conor is loose and smooth, and this "rigidness" about Dustin is why he gets KO'd.

its funny cause most of the stuff he's doing in those GIFS would get him ktfo against Conor. I dont think he makes it past 2....

Either the MMA fanbase secretly rates Conor extremely high in terms of his fighting ability, or they're just underestimating Dustin Poirier to a great extent. You don't beat Max Holloway 2x, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Dan Hooker, and Anthony Pettis without being one of the best lightweights of the last 4-5 years.

So there has been nobody aside from Michael Johnson (4 years ago) that has been able to out box Dustin Poirier at 155lbs. His power has increased, his durability has increased heavily, and his defense has gotten a lot better. It's mind boggling that the MMA fanbase heavily favors Conor in this despite the narratives that were previously pushed of Conor being washed & picking easy fights. Now he's fighting the #2 ranked guy, who beat Gaethje, and it's somehow an easy match up for him lol.

Very close fight. Whoever wins this pretty much establishes themselves as the undisputed #2 LW behind Khabib.
They are underrating Dustin but Conor is still the favorite. Dustin has improved his boxing since his Conor loss and he's bigger now after moving up in weight. He's slower and not as precise as Conor, and Conor has better timing. Plus Dustin doesn't use feints, so you know it's always going to be combos from him every time he plants his feet or steps forward. Which makes it easier for counter strikers. Conor beat Dustin in their first fight using feints and counters which made Dustin hesitant. It froze him instead of pushing forward and throwing combos.

Dustin's best chance is to fight in the inside, mid range and long range is dangerous for him because Conor is faster with better timing/precision and the feints will freeze him up again - since that's not his style of fighting. Plus Dustin is still open for the straight left cross. He's open for it in a lot of combos he throws and how he steps into range doing his combos. Conor should still be able to time that so he needs to watch out for that the most.

Great post and gifs. ANd I agree, I think people are underestimating Poirier big-time. Comparing Connor and Dustin's last couple years, and Poirier has been outshining Connor twofold+

His A level boxing looked like shit vs Beeb. I know the td threat but still, when things didnt go his way he resorted to rush in flat footed swinging wildly. If he does that vs Conrad hes done for.

I've thought that about every combo in every Poirier fight for years, yet he makes it work. I think he dances on the thin edge between throwing with enough power/accuracy/frequency to intimidate most guys into *not* risking setting anything up mid-barrage. But Connor's countering ability has me worried on that front, yes.

Very easy to cherry-pick a fighters good moments from a fight. Why don't you post gifs of all the times he gets hit? cuz that's a lot.

You know what else sucks? Not one of those is vs a southpaw.

I would like him to win, sure, but it was a bad matchup then and its a bad one now. Styles make fights man, if you train, you know which guys in the gym are easy for you and which ones give you trouble, and why. This is that situation.

Conor's striking level is literally light years ahead of Dustin's.

He made Holloway look mediocre. That should tell you everything you need to know

With a clear difference in strength. Holloway was throwing pillows, while Dustin real bombs. If anything, it was a certification of Max impressive chin.

Conor counter strikes him all day, a bunch of sloppy brawl gifs don't help
