Media Dustin Poirier on Gaethje's 254 performance: Tony made Justin look better than he is

Tony was really good around 2 years ago, he's old now, and he's a light weight.

Justin beat a past it Tony, but he best him so badly, that it gives you reason to think he'd beat a prime Tony too.
Nothing has really changed. When was Tony the best? When got almost finished by Kevin Lee or Lando Vannata? Or when he lost to MJ or when he squeezed out a split decision win over Castillo? Stop acting like he was this amazing dominant fighter who just fell off because of age.

Tony really isn't as good as people make him out to be. Dustin, conor and possibly even hooker beat him. Wouldn't be surprised if Oliveira does too.
Completely true. Tony's whole strategy has been getting the piss beat out of him until his opponents get tired. The second he ran into someone that could control themselves he was going to get what Justin did to him.

soyrier almost got killed by a cte Hooker.

Tony was briefly mounted by Lee and took no significant damage. Most of the shots didn’t land. He was laughing and grinning like a lunatic as the bell rang. That’s not “almost being finished.” The dude won 12 fucking fights in a row, 3rd most top 10 wins in LW history, most of them in bloody and vicious fashion. The dude IS almost 37, well beyond the years most Top LW’s fall off. Age does matter. Be gone with your trash take.

Hes done.
Hes gonna pass the torch to Oliveira next. Just watch

I like how you skipped Lando part.

Tony is a fun fighter for sure, but his run has been far from stellar. He’s been rocked in almost all of his fights and has never really outclassed any of his opponents. He usually just outlasts them. He couldn’t outlast Justin. And Justin may be the best fighter he’s ever faced, so it’s ridiculous to say he lost just because he’s older. And regarding Tony’s top10 wins:

#2 RDA
#8 Lee
#6 Pettis
#4 Cerrone

That’s it. And Tony didn’t dominate those guys, those were bloody wars that could’ve go both ways.

Tony is good, but he’s win streak ain’t even close to Khabib’s, he really didn’t separate himself from the pack. Gaethje, Conor and Dustin would’ve mostly likely beat any version of Tony

tony is the type of guy that will try to brawl Justin in a rematch, even though he can win easily on the ground, even via pulling guard.

Tony seems like he's not good at adjusting on the fly or something, like if his crazy pressure doesn't work and he starts losing, he kind of keeps losing the rest of the fight the same way, I still think a fresh Tony with a normal camp would have beat Gaethje. Cutting weight once is a big deal, doing it twice and preparing for Khabib the entire time is massive

I know it’s popular to say a fighter is done after a single loss, but during Tony’s streak he was getting rocked a lot.

agreed, but I don't think its enough to beat the guys he's lost too. Maybe could beat eddie. Maybe. I think the improvements cause him to take less damage and beat tony. But that's about it. I don't think he beats dustin in a rematch. I don't think he beats conor. Use to think he could fuck up conors legs but I I don't buy that anymore.

"Pffft. Gaethje took No damage from Ferguson after 4.5rds. Everybody does that. Nothing to see here."

There is alot of truth to this. It was one performance- one fight. The gaejthe backers were out in full force ( gee- what a surprise) and still believe justin would beat anyone not named khabib. However -justin did evolve as compared to his first few fights in UFC. Gaejthe has a gas tank now and not so ambitious into getting into a wreckless bomb for bomb war. He has gotten better but I dont see him winning any title.
We'll see- he stays with trev and he should hover around top 5 for a bit

Flip side of coin- Justin probably got Tony at that perfect time in Ferguson s career. I'm not going to say Tony is " past it" just yet. Hes too talented a fighter to say off one fight BUT I 100% believe his very best days are behind him. He had a wide open window for such a long time and I believe that window not so wide anymore.

We'll see ....and Justin has gotten better but not to the point of his backers .It was laughable how many people were fooled into picking him to upset khabib.

Gathje has improved a lot in his gameplanning, his ground game doesn't look very good though. You can improve as a fighter but still have holes in your game, most fighters do.

Gaejthe has a gas tank now
I never bought that. I still don't buy it. One fight doesn't change anything especially in the one guy in question was just standing in front of him eating jabs and straight rights.

I still believe Gaethje is a front end fighter, imo. I don't believe his cardio is like conors that its super bad or something, butt its not as good as people are making it out to be.

  • Dustin bet Khabib to win and Bet him to win by submission.
  • Mentions how surprised how of Justin's BJJ and position awareness on the ground, but says he has no room to talk because despite doing BJJ for a long time, he got beat by Khabib there too
  • Says Certain guys can't adjust their styles that much. Justin is the wrecking ball, not so much the matador.
  • Tony made Justin look a little better than he is honestly.
I'm glad people are realizing 2.0s aren't real.

I would say Ortega's updated his standup enough to be considered a 2.0.... I don't think that means he will be champ now but his standup is certainly a lot better than it was when he fought Max. Pretty sure he lost every completed round against every fighter until he got the finishes until he fought KZ.

I think he's a better fighter. I don't believe in 2.0 though. I don't believe he's a different fighter. Better? Sure. Different? No.
