Drug Smuggler Senteced to Death

Everybody knows your life is forfeit if you try to smuggle hard drugs into an East Asian country. They don't tolerate it. At best, you will rot your life away in a prison that makes US prisons look like Club Med.

Didn't she ever see Brokedown Palace? Get it together, Granny!

Ya I am not really shedding a tear for this woman. It is not like she smuggled a joint.

Don't break the law, don't get sentenced to death.

If you can't follow these rules then tell your story walkin'.

Being arrested doesn't necessarily mean being sentanced to any time though. I'm sure the arrests made for "drunk in public" are very comparable as well.

Let's not change this into a pothead persecution thread. A ticket, or a weekend in jail, is not really comparable to a death sentance. C'mon now.

You've entirely missed the point.

I'm not comparing sentencing between this and a minor marijuana possession.

What I am saying is that law enforcement resources are finite. Each marijuana arrest uses resources that could go to investigating, prosecuting, or incarcerating perpetrators of those crimes.

So if we are going to judge Indonesia for going after drug smugglers as opposed to child prostitution and child labor we should judge ourselves for chasing cannabis smokers as opposed to violent criminals.

Have you ever scene the movie Return To Paradise?

It is a pretty interesting movie where Jaquin Phoenix is on death row in Thailand for hash and stars Vince Vaughn in a dramatic role.

Real interesting look at the different cultural aspects

"Return to Paradise" was great but "Midnight Express" is absolutely brilliant and horrifying.
If you don't know it, it's based on the true story of Billy Hayes, who tries to smuggle four pounds of hashish from Turkey to the US in the 70s but gets caught in Turkey.
After being promised to be released after 4 years, his sentence gets changed to life. He ends up getting transferred to some psychiatric ward which even more horrifying than prison. After a while he begins losing his mind and his ability to speak.

Midnight express spawned a generation of "Turkish prison" jokes.

If this story about her children being threatened is true then I feel absolutely dreadful for her, it seems like I'm the only one though.

It's unlikely the execution will go ahead.

Lmao...you know nothing of East Asian Drugs laws...they don't give a fu*k if you are British or American.

chances are, they will expedite this execution because of all the publicity.

I'll have to check that out

Ah' gotcha.

That being said, does Indonesia even have any laws on either of those issues? I would imagine that Child Prostitution would be a crime(never know though, with some of these countries), but Child Labour laws are very, uhhh, "diverse", for lack of a better term, all around the world.

You mean an enlightened bunch. Why would you capitalize a word in the middle of a sentence? Hope this enlightens you some.

I was making sure it stood out for you. I thought it would be needed.

Maybe the Queen should send the fleet to blockade Indonesia while negotiations take place.

I assume you are joking, but westerners aren't above the law...

this woman knowingly broke the law and now will have to pay the ultimate price.

I don't see what is so difficult to understand about this. Don't smuggle drugs into these nations...if you do, you will get killed. SImple as that.

Its not like she was sneaking in a little bit for her own use. Eight pounds is a lot of coke.

They haven't executed anyone since 2008. So it's possible they are unofficially changing their DP stance.

I don't know. I'm not an expert on Indonesian law. You are certainly right about child labor laws being "diverse".
