Dream matchup, wrong timing

Watching Aldo still compete I was thinking back to his fight with Piotr Yan and what a great matchup that would have been if it was Jose Aldo from 5 years earlier (that's 9 years ago, can't believe it's been 9 years since Aldo was champ). I know people like to say he's still competing at a high level and I agree, but pre-Conor Aldo would have toyed with guys like Mario Bautista and Jonathan Martinez. Prime Aldo vs Yan would have been epic, as would several other fights had they not been at different points in their careers.

So a few off the top of my head, dream matchups that actually happened, but one of the fighters involved was no longer the best version of himself:

Stipe vs Jones

I know this one is not gonna be popular, and it has not happened yet, and most don't want it to happen, but if this fight was made about 5 years ago it would have been epic.

Great thread. Sometimes that happens and they can't get matched up during prime years. Also vs Yan was a lot better than people recall. Seems people just remember the end and not that it was extremely competitive. Stipe vs. Jon five years ago would have been much better. The Anderson vs. Izzy was obvious. Really great thread topic

In my opinion it's Wand vs Chuck

Both guys were at the tail end of their careers. In fact that was Chuck's last win. It was a very good fight , but if this fight happened 4 to 5 years earlier it would've been even more epic. Wand could've gotten his chance to fuck Chuck much earlier if it wasn't for Rampage ruining the plan

No complaining about timing when it comes to Yan and Aldo imo.

People fight when they fight. They didnt come up at the same time.

Wand vs Chuck is something you can lament about more because that fight could have been made when both were in prime.

No complaining, I realize Yan and Aldo couldn't have been made at a better time because if Aldo was still prime Yan would have been too green... same with Mirko/JDS and Izzy/Anderson.

Stipe/Jones and Chuck/Wand are different tho because their primes actually overlap and could have been made.
 
A couple that come to mind:
Mir vs. Barnett
Couture vs. Coleman
Pettis vs. Holloway would have been fireworks when Pettis was still himself.

and in the other temporal direction:
Johnson vs. Cruz.
Holloway vs. McG
 
Fedor vs Rampage/Hendo/Hizzo would have been a lot more fun in a PRIDE OWGP

Coleman vs Randy

Mighty Mouse vs Cruz had the opposite problem, it happened too early in DJ's career
 
Both were too old when it happened but I think Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra would've been awesome in 04/05.

True. Only Jones was much too chicken$hit to engage Stipe or any other HW.

It did win FOTN so if two older guys can take that from prime Rashad and Lyoto, I imagine these two fighting in their own primes, would probably be FOTY.

Igor was still prime when he fought Mirko, he was only 30 at the time and he went on to win his next 5 fights after that loss. I just think Mirko was a nightmare matchup for him regardless of the timing.

Actually if anyone had a disadvantage in that fight it was probably Mirko since he was still a bit inexperienced in mma at the time, but it didn't matter cause it was always gonna be a striking battle.
