Anyone ever notice this common self-defense mechanism? Particularly used against P4P greats?

I'm talking about when a Hater changes his attitude from favoring a fighter to beat someone, to downplaying them completely as soon as the fight is booked. It's a trait used to pre-minimize the achievement of a fighter just in case it happens.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

We all hate most fighters. They just have to fight someone you like more for it to come out.

/sarcasm

Easier to praise their strengths incase they pull off the upset.

Most recent one was Silva-Bisping. "If Bisping wins it's only because Silva is so old and done." Typical low life talk.

I didn't cheer for anyone in this fight, but at the end Bisping gained a lot of respect for me. Just saying.

Realistically, according to Sherdog, everyone in MMA is overrated and nobody is elite.

Or: "If Bisping wins, it proves Anderson is overrated". Perfectly illustrates my above quote. On Sherdog, everyone is a can.

Short camp Nate...

Speak for yourself. "We all hate most fighters"? Why? Does it irk you that they are diciplined badasses doing what they love, does that bring forth your insecurities about your own mediocracy and inability to strive?

It's not always the same people saying these things. There were people excited to see Nate fight McGregor, and then there were people who thought he wouldn't be a good match up for him. After the fight was scheduled, I for one saw 4 Diaz' fights and came to the conclusion he stands very little chance against McGregor. Most people are just being reasonable about this particular fight. The odds favoring McGregor are starting to skyrocket as time goes by and we understand what kind of fight this will likely be. I'm not trying to downplay Nate so I can hate on McGregor myself, but even the people doing so get a free pass in my opinion because on paper this is indeed an easy fight for the irish.

lol calm down defensive lil buddy.

sarcasm. This site seems to hate the main reason they flock here. I like plenty of fighters.

Another Silva situation I recall was when Anderson was supposedly ducking a great grappler in Okami, then as soon as the fight was booked the narrative changed to Silva would walk through him.

Sherdog 101. Find any way possible to discredit a fighter you don’t like. Extra points awarded for those that do so before the fight even happens.
