On what first inspired him to become a fighter.
I read a lot of manga as a kid. I read every fighting and boxing manga there was, but I was most inspired by The Fighting. I wanted to know if the Dempsey roll would work in a real street fight. I always wanted to become a strong man.
On why he prefers counter-punching over pressure fighting/brawling.
I have no problems with brawling. Honestly, I loved to exchange punches, but I began to research how to become a counter-puncher and the art of hitting without getting hit. I wanted to become more efficient and that made counter-punching become naturally my main style. I am still confident in brawling. If that situation arises I am ready to exchange. I loved to brawl early in my career.
On the art of counter-punching.
A lot of people mistake my ability to counter-punch on pure athleticism and my reaction speed. They say my accuracy is just a talent I was born with, but they are very wrong. It is very difficult to punch reactionary without setting up the positioning of my opponent. People have to understand that my whole movement and the way I stalk my opponents with my footwork is creating the opportunity of the counter punch before I even throw a punch. You must predict the opponents movement if you want to land the perfect punch. That is the only way you can be truly accurate.
If I have to make a comparison, I am like a sniper waiting for the exact moment for my opponent to start putting his finger on the trigger. I force my opponents into doing that. Every movement I do is setup to create a route where I will be able to start hunting him. By the time they know they are in a trap, it is too late. Only fans who understand high level striking will be able to appreciate the subtle things I do in the cage.
Do you think anyone can challenge you in the standup in MMA? What about Conor Mcgregor?
I have never met anyone like that in sparring or in a professional bout. I know I am capable of knocking Conor Mcgregor out. He is a long southpaw so I will have to do some research.
On his fight with Thiago Tavares
Tavares is a strong jiu-jitsu fighter, but in MMA grappling I am also strong. I know I can beat him with my wrestling and my ground game. I don't want to win by knockout this time, I plan to submit Thiago Tavares. I am going to take him down and submit him in the 1st round. I plan to give him his first ever submission loss.
