Don't you forget about me: Guy Mezger

He reminds me of a Gustaffson of yesteryear. Tall and rangy boxer with good takedown defense but just average chin and power makes it tough to get past the elite.

Is this the foo who always is always with lawlor...looking like he's 60 years old on roids but dresses like a douche in his bedazzled gear

OP, you don't have to sell me on Guy Mezger, I was a big fan back in the day. He was, IMO, the best fighter in the Lion's Den for quite a spell.

He gave Wanderlei and Chuck all they could handle during both their primes. He also had very close and competitive fights with Saku, Arona and Lil' Nog that could (and maybe SHOULD) have easily gone his way. A few years back he was brought up frequently along with Ninja Rua when discussing fighters who often got a raw deal on the score cards. Both of those guys, a few close decisions against a few key guys went their way and we might be talking about their careers a little differently.

Plus, the dude was 200 lbs and fought Semmy F-ing Schilt multiple times and even beat him once.

Guy mezger is always overlooked for some reason..but that dude was a stud..got robbed so many times in pride smh

guys 1 of the early ufc fighters who woulda beat royce. he had better wrestling and striking. sprawl n brawl

Mezger was awesome and one of the most underrated fighters of all time. Very little would have to change for him to hold victories over Wand, Liddell, Arona, Diet Nog, Sakuraba in addition to his win over Tito. His opponent schedule is essentially a who's who of golden era LHWs and he was impressive vs all of them

He certainly was one of MMA's true well rounded fighters. His grappling was fantastic. And it seemed all of his fights were exciting to watch.

Guy Mezger was incredibly ahead of his time, but he is remarkably unlucky. Should have beaten Sakuraba, should have gotten the decision against Arona, he very easily could have KO'd Chuck with that right hand.

His is a brand that oyu have to watch to understand that he was very solid, because his record is very poor number wise.

So much this

Although despite it all Guy still has 30 pro MMA wins during an ultra-competitive era for his weightclass. And that's in addition to his 22 pro kickboxing wins. Mezger is one of the biggest badasses eva but he's chronically overlooked. His portability as a fighter makes him one of the rare guys from yesteryear who could come in today and instantly be a contender

Great striker but with a porcelain chin. Was probably winning every fight he ever lost

This is a pretty common critique of Mezger but it's inaccurate

Look at these shots he took from prime Liddell before finally going out:

That's enough to literally kill most people. Mezger was also eating heavy shots from Wand before Wand heatbutted him into bolivian

Honestly, if he had the killer instinct of anything more than a rabbit, he would have beat both Liddell and Silva.
Can you imagine if he had a resume with wins over Liddell, Silva, AND Tito?
One thing's for certain, the guy was awesome to watch.
It wasn't a lack of killer instinct, its just a bad thing to go toe to toe which hard bangers with good chins like Liddell/Silva in their primes. Trying to duke it out after getting Wanderlei hurt got him koed, he got hit with a small headbutt but I think he was in trouble anyway.
