For a couple of days i posted some threads about certain legends of the sport to try and educate the younger fans of MMA. I truly do enjoy assisting the younger generation about the history of MMA (albeit short). With these segments, which i will post once a day, i will now try and delve some history about relatively "unknown" fighters with a short profile and video. I hope you enjoy them.

Name: Guy Mezger
Gym: Lion's Den
Record: 30-14-2
Accomplishments: UFC 13 Lightweight Tournament winner (1997), Openweight Pancrase Champion (1998),

Guy Mezger came into the MMA scene in UFC 4 held in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1994 as an alternate winner over Jason Fairn (video below). Guy trains at the infanous Lion's Den in Dallas. A 6th degree black belt in Karate, Guy also wrestled in High School and has had great success in kickboxing as he held the WKC Kickboxing championship in 1995, he would relinquish that title to compete in Pancrase over in Japan. A champion in Pancrase with wins over notable fighters such as MMA legend Masakatsu Funaki, Semmy Schilt, Yuki Kondo and Manabu Yamada. His transition back to the UFC back in 1997 saw him beating UFC's own poster child Tito Ortiz for the Lightweight Tournament in 1997. From there he would have success in other organizations such as Pride, King of the Cage. Guy always an exciting fighter to watch even in matches he has lost. Two matches (both losses) held in Pride FC in Japan pitted Guy Mezger against UFC star Chuck Liddell and future Pride legend Wanderlai Silva. In both matches Guy was absolutely aggressive and even wining at both points in the match. Guy retired from MMA in 2005.

Is that you, Birdofthad?

Guy Mezger was an awesome fighter. He just had bad luck fighting in one of the most talent stacked weight classes in MMA at the time.

good read, there is so much more to his career and i dont say that because i know him personally

but still good read

It was unfortunate he had to pull out of that 3rd fight with Tito, but it was best for his health reasons. Legend.

So whos the Bender, Clark, and Johnson of the group?

I always enjoyed watching his fights. He was a very talented fighter and one of my favs.He had Wandy and Chuck in trouble in thier fights but wasnt able to pull out the win.

Guy was doing ok against Liddell until, well you know.

If only he had a better chin/more power.

Guy always looked sharp as fuck with his striking. His performance against a Japanese dude kinda reminded me of Wonderboy, Guy had better punching combinations though.

Schiavello: "Guy Mezger, are you a citizen (of the Dongbar Nation)?"
Mezger: "I'm not a citizen but I'm certainly not an illegal alien."

Mezger was awesome

He really was a very underrated fighter in terms of skill set, he was excellent striker, probably the best in the Lion's den next to Maurice Smith. And was quite an accomplished submission grappler.

I took Guy for granted in the early 2000s. Looking back on it he was a very complete fighter that threw nice combinations. He had good takedown defense and good kick boxing. I don't remember seeing him on the ground too much except for his two fights with Tito but I know he was pretty solid on the mat.

He reminds me of a Gustaffson of yesteryear. Tall and rangy boxer with good takedown defense but just average chin and power makes it tough to get past the elite.
