this stuff seems to have reached Phrenology lvls of pseudo science. In any other instance you wouldnt look at a group of Individuals who had been inbred generation after generation as your strongest stock.

somewhere along the way we have groups of people correlating appearances with performances.

I feel the dog breeding done today is eugenics and will be seen as backwards and asinine in the year's to come.

Are you responding to that thread with that hyena from Montana? I think it’s cruel what they are doing to some dogs. I love Golden retrievers. I grew up with them and even bred them when I was in college. My golden pups help pay for some of my college. My last golden died a couple of years ago. He died due to hip displasia. He couldn’t even walk around and he was 7. It breaks my heart that we did this to such a beautiful breed of dogs. They have so many health problems and their rates of getting cancer is high.

I have a rescue I found from my local animal shelter. He is a mix of a Great Pyrenees and Labrador retriever. He is a good dog but stubborn as hell. I still miss the Golden temperament and I am thinking I will get a cross breed in a couple of years. Maybe a Golden doodle or something like that. I need a Golden in my life.

yeah figured I could bring the discussion about breeds into here since it was getting pretty involved in the other one. . .

it really is fucked up the types of dogs we've forced into creation. they're all great and i love 'em, but the purebreeds have so many genetic problems. The poor Great Dane must have a terrible end-of-life stage as it's size can no longer be supported by its body. The toy dogs only exist for superficial aesthetic. Bulldogs are amazing, awesome and cute but man, poor guys have such terrible breathing. it's not right, i agree. it is the behavior of a mentally immature species. i don't think the future is any better. scientists want to resurrect extinct species like mammoths - let the species rest in peace for gods sake. we can't even take care of the animals alive today. remember this episode of Batman Beyond?

mutts are almost always better in every way. smarter, healthier, etc.
not if you're using the specific breed for its original purpose. For example, any mix you create with a border collie will dumb it down and weaken its herding capabilities. And any other genetics added to a dachshund would render it worse for its job to hunt badgers.

But for the most part, all dogs bred solely for looks and fashion are highly compromised.

People want dogs with derpy exaggerated features. And women want dogs that fit in purses. We're monsters if you stop and think about it, but most people don't.

yea, thats more what i was getting at. dogs that are bred to be what they are are the exception. look what they have done to the poor bulldog though.

i had a mutt that just died last year and he clearly had australian shepard in him. fortunately for me, whatever else he had made him not need as much exercise or work as the purebred. however, he still had a lot of those instincts and loved to "herd" people or my cats.

What do you suggest? A golden retriever is full of health problems. I’m trying to get a dog that is trying to get away from that. I love Goldens man.
Don’t go with the doodle man, don’t do it. A lot of larger dogs have health issues later in life, and can be relatively short lived (8-10 years). You just have to know that going in. If you are looking for a working breed in the medium to largish range both Brittany and Springer Spaniels are hardy, along with Irish Setters and many in the pointer group as well. I really can’t recommend a breed for you, without knowing any particulars. Just don’t go paying money for these doodle breeds. If you’re looking for a mutt there are a countless number dogs on the verge of being killed at shelters. Rescue one of those little rascals.

I have a rescue right now I found at my animal shelter. I have had several rescues. I’m just missing my golden.

The biggest issue is people breeding show dogs. Pure bred working dogs still maintain their vigor because they still need to perform. The other big issue is culling. If you're going to breed pure bred dogs, you have to be willing to give the dogs that show bad traits the dirt nap. You have too many idiots breeding dogs that don't know wtf they're doing.

Breaks my heart whenever I see a pug or a bulldog. Poor bastards can barely breathe.

Here are some "then and now" pics:

bull-terrier.jpg

Bull Terriers have ridiculously deformed skulls and chests now. Shorter legs. All sorts of medical complications.

basset-hound.jpg

Basset Hounds have shorter legs and droopier eyelids and ears. Prone to vision and spinal issues.

boxer-dog.jpg

Boxers have been bread to have smaller faces. Like pugs and bull dogs, they're prone to breathing issues.

Speaking of which.

And so many more. German Shepherds, Dachshunds, Pugs, Saint Bernards, most Mastiff breeds, Great Danes, etc etc.

Human's have ruined dogs for fashion.

Dogs are far more genetically diverse than humans (whose population was bottle necked to just about 10,000 people around 80,000 BC). While some breeds are def “inbred” many of the pedigree breeds are just fine when it comes to genetic diversity.

You just need a good breed. Show English cockas are bred for their looks and the only issue you get with them is a propensity to ear infections (as their huge ears, and coat in general, needs to be diligently cleaned).

Her kind and friendly personality and temperament, stamina/toughness, intelligence (only barks at house intruders she doesn’t know while possessing the loud bark of a hound not some rat yap) etc were all traits selected for and bred to perfection by English dog lovers.
