I can’t find anything listing her as being ranked in bjj, but I see she’s a master of sport in Judo and has trained Sambo as well. Obviously she trains no gi grappling, but I’m guessing she uses her judo/sambo base instead of bjj when rolling.

I think Santos seemed to have found a weakness in her training and did a good job of exploiting it. I remember when Liz Carmouche almost subbed Ronda she went and trained with Rener Gracie afterward to work on her defence. Valentina may want to think about doing something similar.

Yeah she does.

Don’t know with who but watching her you can tell she knows what she is doing down there

The thing is she is really good at grappling but her grappling just isn’t super elite as many would have you to believe. She is just above average. Still pretty good but not the best

There are many girls at 125 with grappling that is as good or even way better than hers in the division but most of those girls are younger fighters and they are still working they’re way up the ladder.

Most people are just really lazy when it comes to assessing potential threats in her division and write off everyone without properly looking at their skill sets.

When these younger girls make it to the top of the division, Valentina is gonna struggle BIG TIME and eventually lose.

Taila Santos is the first of many

Sorry, but I had to <45>

One of the interesting things I noticed when I was training was the number of wrestling/no gi types that should have been brown or black belt but had blue belts because they only training with their gi occassionally.

When they do, Valentina is going to be 37-38 years old and retired.

It seems she doesn’t train in the gi—/ only dies no gi. And typically you don’t belt up without putting in hours with the gi

I don’t think she’s training no gi bjj though, likely she’s just using her judo/sambo background when rolling. She doesn’t move like a jiu jitsu player at all when grappling.

Shevchenko’s got elite grappling, she has the best takedowns in all of wmma for example. That said, her game isnt well rounded as it seems she struggles positionally when on the defensive, similar to Fedor and other judo/sambo players when they meet an elite bjj grappler.

Valentina has said many many times again and again that she is never going to retire because martial arts is her life. She has been vet clear about that.

Also some of these girls could make the TOP 5 in the next year or two whole Valentina in 35 or 36…

She is going to lose it’s coming

She has weaknesses to be exploited. She has a lot of trouble getting back to her feet once she hits the ground. Nunes, Maia, and Santos have all been able to control her on the ground.

Even if they don't call it BJJ everybody in the UFC trains grappling... except maybe Justin Gaethje

The main issue is trying to do the throws without having an overhook/whizzer, it allowed Santos to take her back in those scrambles. Higher level grapplers will not settle after that head and arm throw and will reverse it or take the back. Valentina wasn't prepared for that and it happened multiple times in the fight.

Most jiu jitsu clubs I’ve trained at have always said don’t mess around with head and arm throws because any good grappler will take your back once it hits the mat.

This is true for the most part, very easy to take the back from that throw. You can always anticipate them going for the back after the throw and set traps for that as well but that may or may not work out, so it's risky because if you mess up they'll have your back.

I think her grappling training is fight specific with being able to get out of any bad situation and if reversed itself, the basics of ending a fight; I.e. RNC, Guillotine, Arm Bar but she is not winning by Go-go plata or Knee Bar.
