Does the mafia still exist?

I know back in the days, the Italian-American mafia was huge but after the RICO act+ rise of corporation, it seems like they are not extinct. But when I check the Wikipedia to read about different crime organizations, I have noticed that lots of them are still "present"

For example, the five families the Chicago outfit as well as mixed ethnic gangs the winter hill gang is still around. The only major one that is defunct is Mickey Cohens gang/crime family.

If that's the case, how come there is no activity from them? Also how do they make money now a days considering the fact that they have a well known history?
I am willing to bet they are alive and real (more often operating in cyber space though). I think there are much more than just Italian players too. I am willing to bet drug cartel and/or MS13 have their hands in the pot as well. Just a guess.

A mafia boss was shot to death this morning five minutes from the house where I grew up.

He was the second boss killed in the last few days.

Reputed Montreal Mafia leader Andrew Scoppa killed in Pierrefonds

Damn, they are still out there. Hard to be a mafioso today than back in the day.

Of course, its just not like before with all the tradition which makes it not very authentic in a sense.

So I work in corrections and I'll tell you the mafia is still very active. It's a different game with technology, but the same ambition that started the original influx of organized crime is alive and well today. They actively recruit and they still live by the code. The issue with the mafia is the amount of ratting that occured during the RICO push by the FBI. Loyalty was the big selling point of the mob but it became every man for themselves and a lot of high-ranking members took big sentences on the chin while witness protection took over the rats. Great stories though haha

Running cigarettes from cheap areas like Virginia to NYC, you make a buck a profit per pack. The mafia, gangs and even ME terrorists are in on it. Apparently like 80% of NYC cigarettes are smuggled in.

I actually looked up a mobster I went to school with who got 10 years recently. They still exist but not the extent of the past. They'll never go away.

Of course the Mafia still exists. RICO has turned them into something different than they used to be, but they are still active and involved in several industries from construction to waste management, especially up north like in Chicago and NYC. The ability to prosecute the leaders and give them life sentences despite their layers of separation has turned out a lot of older members. Their code of honor disappears quicker than Jimmy Hoffa when you start throwing life sentences at them.

For example, the Chicago outfit runs a construction company that does a lot of business in the area. They mostly have their hands in more legitimate sources of income along with the standard drug and sex trades.

The mob is EVERYWHERE that there's any money.

Up north? Yeah, we had plenty of mob activity in CT, RI too but let's not pretend there's no organized crime in Miami.

Fuck, the Ukranian mob has call centers in North Carolina with their shipping and receiving in Staten Island NY.

To OP, the reason you don't see effective organized crime syndicates making the news much is because they're trying to stay protected and keep the money flowing. If you know who they are, they're fucking up.

To this end, there will always be layers of protection.

A man can drive a truck from point A to point B because your friend has done some runs for them already and you may meet a dude at the pickup, and another at the drop off, but you never meet or even hear the name of the lieutenants that those guys answer to, much less their bosses or the Capo out of Providence.

Also if you really want to hear some crazy stories there's a lot of retired mob guys from various syndicates in Santa Monica, not just Whitey Bulger but a lot of Russian and Ukranian dudes too.

Definitely. I only know about Chicago because I worked in the construction industry there and dealt with corrupt union officials and expediters to get buildings developed. In NYC I was dating the daughter of an infamous underboss for about a year and saw how their family worked from the inside. Obviously since I was only with the daughter and not a "friend of theirs" I wasn't privy to any details, but I have a set of eyes and it sure wasn't a regular working lifestyle for her father.

Anywhere there is money to be made through illegal means there will be criminal activity. Anytime there is enough money to be made, criminals will organize into street gangs. And eventually if it's large enough those gangs will turn into organized crime. You'll find organized criminal groups in most major cities and developed areas profiting off crime. The Italian mafia families have a pretty strong influence up north, but here in Atlanta you don't really run into them or have to worry about organized crime like that.

The Italian mafia has moved away from the extreme violence they used to use because of the police attention it draws. They have more subtle ways to get what they want.
