I mean, i'm trying to gain weight, will it stunt gaining muscle like running would? thanks.

have you taken a look at bas?

Cardio will not hinder muscle growth if its in moderation, you gain mass by consuming more calories then you burn, cardio activities burn high amounts of calories. So as long as your consuming more then enough calories you can do cardio and gain weight.. the more cardio you do though obviously the harder weight gain is.

um.....i just did about an hours workout of lifting, and then ran about a mile. i heard if you run right after muscle work ur body dips into its fat storage or something (cuz you used your muscle oxygen, something something???). im trying to gain muscle, but i want to lose a few pounds as well (just around gut, im not heavy but i want to). id like lean muscle, however..... i heard you can lose wegiht and gain muscle at hte same time (well, its much less effective then focusing on one, then the other), but will i have lean muscle, or build muscle endurance this way?? if you dont understand ill rewrite, im tired sry lol.

if your goal is to gain muscle do not do more then one cardio session a week. And if you do any grappling or striking don't do any cardio at all besides what you get in class.

You should also stick to lactic power training instead of vo2 training if your goal is to gain weight.

atp-lactic = 1-30seconds
latic = 30-120 seconds
Vo2= 120+

but doesn't bas's dvds have a weight training routien? do you need alot of equipment for that?

bas is against real strength training....he is all about ciruit training....one of his downfalls in my opinion

Looks like your on the track you want to be, your body uses glycogen as energy, every carb you eat and even protein and fat to a lesser extent turns into this type of energy.

Cardio after working out is a great time to do it, with deminished supplies your body does try and burn more fat, as opposed to cardio first which can hinder your lifting. Your absolutly right that you can do both at the same time, however if your trying to add alot of mass to your body a bulking and cutting phase will suit you alot better, you can really skyrocket your mass if you bulk properly without too much added fat. If your basically trying to add some muscle and get more cut i would do them together. Doing a bulk gain you do gain lean muscle you also increase that amount of fat, by cutting you remove the fat and maintain the lean muscle you have built. Muscle endurance is basically how long a muscle can perform a certain activity, by working out you gain both stength and endurance, doing higher reps will increase your muscle endurance and lower reps for strength.

This link may be helpfull to you.

you actually burn your muscle glycogen, not oxygen. oxygen in the muscles comes from the ATP/CP system which is a whole other book right there. basically, doing a lot of cardio can burn off your muscle tissue if you're not consuming enough calories to support maintenance and/or growth of new muscle. regardless of your macronutrient ratios, you still have the bottom line of calories in vs calories out. what you can do is figure out how many calories you need for your daily maintenance and then add in according to your activities. when in doubt, add in extra calories in the form of protein. this way, you're doing what you can to retain all of your muscle tissue and your body will burn carbs and/or fat for energy.

keep one thing in mind, its pretty difficult to gain muscle AND lose fat at the same time. as someone above me suggested, try doing the bulking or muscle building phase first and then move onto a cutting phase

I think it gets hyped up more than it needs to be (cardio v muscle).

I lost around 20kg (44 pounds) in about 3 months, using mainly Bas' workouts. I continued with weight training (wasn't trying to build muscle, but I ended up stronger than I had ever been before) 3 days a week. I was doing around 60 mins cardio on weight days and 90 mins cardio on alternate days.

My cardio consisted of about 3 x 30 min runs a week and and the remaining cardio was all Bas's workouts. I mixed them up so I was doing mainly the MMA workouts and boxing/thai boxing workouts on the heavy bag. I certainly hadn't lost muscle mass. I was often using the mma workout CDs to warm up. It was not uncommon to do an mma workout and then do the next track straight after. Once or twice I did 3-4 of Bas' workouts in one day (just to see if I could), not necessarily in a row.

Anyway, I had to work up to that and I was full of energy, didn't feel remotely overtrained and I'm certain that I not only didn't lose muscle, but probably gained a bit too.

Of course, if you were training body building for mass or something, then yes it would hamper you. Perhaps from draining your energy levels if nothing else. Hit the S&P forums if you want specifics. Urban has the CDs and he'll tell you how it would affect mass.

I have the Casettes... that's right: OLDSCHOOL!

For my money they may be the best cardio all the wannabe fighters who will never step into a gym and train for real who come on here will get. Will they destroy muscle? Look, train right, eat right, lift heavy, and you won't have to worry about this shit. IMO, unless you['re a complete fatass, concerning yourself with losing bodyfat (like those last four abs) is a waste of time. You would be better off spending that energy improving your lifting, cardio and diet regimens. If you just fucking start working, you would be suprised how little the concerns you have actually matter.

lol god i love you Urban, uve become even angrier then u were when i was in S&P

Well put.

One way to put on some lean mass and burn some fat is to do cardio on your "even days" and weights on "odd" days. Mon-Wed-Fri Weights, Tue-Thur-Sat cardio. Its' basically the "Body for Life" set up which i did for 6 weeks, when I first started lifting and didn;t know what else to do. I dropped 2% BF but gaind a couple pounds. Alot of people commented that I looked better too, so maybe its worth a try.

I don't get it, the Bas Rutten workouts doesn't work for fat ones? I'm 1.70 and 83kg so I want to lose 10kg until december!!!

Years ago, when I was younger and even dumber than I am now, I served in a TA Infantry unit. I used to put a change of clothes into my bergen(backpack)and run to the gym, then workout.

When I told my unit PT Instructor about this, he gave me the kind of bollocking only NCO's can deliver. Because I was doing things the wrong way around: Lift first, run second, for exactly the reasons you have just mentioned.:redface:
