Does powerlifting help your grappling ?

lol you posted youtube videos and a dragondoor article and are telling me i need to cite sources to back up my opinions

i have deadlifted 450 lbs before, granted i weighed over 200 lbs at the time so its not extremely impressive, but i would say deadlifting 450 lbs once is not nearly as hard as doing a burpees for a minute, you can either lift the weight or you cant, its foolish to try to slowly drag the barbell up your shins with horrible form if you just can't do it clean

sure your CNS will be fried after a powerlifting workout but it doesnt require as much cardio or sustained effort as most other types of S&C workouts

i see now that i can't covert people to have an open mind or release themselves from the macho cult of iron.. IRON NEVER FORGIVES, IRON IS THE ONLY WAY, THE IRON NEVER LIES

im pretty sure a woman would rather have someone who can sustain effort for 20 minutes rather than someone who can thrust really really really hard for a few sets of 3, by the way.. i didnt know powerlifting was the best way to get better at sex, thanks for informing me

you should send a newsletter to art departments in different universities around the world telling them that powerlifting is the best supplement for drawing because it helps movement efficiency.. maybe programmers could benefit and type faster if they powerlifted.. maybe you should start telling marathon runners that deadlifting is worthy of their time and will improve their performance

The YouTube video Is the guy who help invite plyo training...

That dragon door article was written by the guy who trained Allison Felix

I knew I shouldn't have wasted my time replying to you... Facts my man not opinions...

Get it together my man. Good luck

It is hilarious to me that people still pretend that you will get slow and tight from lifting weights

Any excuse to not lift heavy I suppose

Lmao, that is some quality posting.

Lol at not lifting heavy weights for fight sport training.

You naysayers do realize that improvement in maximal strength automatically increases "cardio" by making the muscular and neurological output required for bodyweight movements to be lessened right?

In other words:

More strength, bigger gas tank.

If lifting makes you slow, injured and tight its because you suck at lifting and programming.

If you only lift heavy and never work your conditioning, then that's on you.

Assuming you have the cardiovascular output to keep those muscles well irrigated with oxygen.

Agreed 100%.

The caveat is that I said nothing about hypertrophy. Only strength, the majority of which should ideally come via neurological adaptation since this is a weight class based sport.

If I'm not mistaken, the oxygen requirements associated with increases in myofibril density are less than the same requirement for a similar increase in sarcoplasmic fiber numbers.

I could be wrong about that last bit, but I do not think so.

Regardless. Training in the appropriate set/rep ranges is going to keep any unnecessary hypertrophy to a minimum, so the added oxygen requirement is mostly a non issue.

Everybody tells me not to use strength in BJJ. They usually say this after I have tapped them with a kimura/americana/armbar.

Judo based opinion here...

I lift a lot, and my gym workouts tend toward the powerlifting "style" I guess. Mostly deadlifts, squats, bench and overhead press work, with miscellaneous additional exercises thrown in when I'm bored. Heavy as I can go, with an emphasis on pure strength over anything else. Most everyone I do randori with comments on how strong I am (for my unimpressively average size.) I also find that, when matched up against someone of my weight class, I tend to have the advantage when it comes to pure kuzushi.

That being said, any higher belt levels still throw me around like a pool toy, and I'm gradually learning to use strength to augment my skillset, not replace it completely.

So yeah, powerlifting makes you strong. Being strong is a good thing once you learn how to use that strength.

I will say that having gone back to doing a little more Judo I had forgotten how important it is to be physically powerful for standup grappling. It just gives you so much more margin for error in your technique if you can make it work with strength if you only hit the move 90% correct as opposed to 100% correct. I also did legs for the first time in a long time this morning (back problems normally prevent it, but I think I had some form problems in my squat that hopefully I corrected) and I had forgotten how tiring it is. I could barely walk up the stairs to shower. But my back seems okay for now, I hope so. I've always wanted to be able to squat a bit, maybe it will help my surprisingly poor uchi mata.
