I'm glad all the black belt instructors at where I train at roll with everyone from newbies to big and strong upper belts. But anyone trains at a BJJ academy which their black belt instructor plays favoritism? I hear from couple of friends training at their academy that favoritism exist at where they train at. For example, the black belt instructor only want to roll with certain people. Won't roll with beginner newbs, and won't roll with bigger and stronger upper belts that he knows can possibly tap him. It will suck for certain people paying for that shit when the black belt instructor doesn't want to roll with if you suck too bad or is too good.

I've seen what you described at every single gym I've been to in the last 8 years or so.

I don't think it's bad. People are human. They're allowed to like one thing more then another.

Ego. I found they train with newer guys more when they are older. Probably has to do with the younger instructors still training for fights.

Damn, that sucks. Every BJJ academy I trained at, all the black belts will roll with everyone, don't matter how weak or good the students are.

When black belt instructors refuse to roll with certain students because they suck really bad or they're too good and can possibly tap the black belt instructor, I think that's pretty f**ked up. People paying their hard earned money and the black belt instructor doesn't want to roll with them. It's bullshit. It's like I'm paying to eat what the head chef made, not what the line cook made.

I used to think so too. And then I turned 35.

Every once in a while I'll have a day where 200 pound white belts come in who "used to grapple with their brothers" come in with piss and vinegar. The next day I feel like I got hit by a car.

And that's me. I am not small. I do not train hardcore everyday. My job does not rely on me not getting injured.

Now if a 150 pound black black belt doesn't feel like rolling with a random white belt who wants to relive his high school wrestling days, I can get behind that. The black belt needs to be able to train the next day and a large noob will get just as much from rolling with a decent blue instead. You gotta stay healthy after a certain point in your life. That means being selective of who you train with.

I get what you're saying. But I'm talking about certain black belts that won't roll with some of their students anymore because those students can possibly tap them. For example, few of my friends are black belts under the same instructor who's a 3rd degree or whatever. Their instructor hasn't roll with them since they were all purple or brown. They told me they haven't roll with their instructor for at least 5 years before they left to train somewhere else or open their own gym. I think it's obviously an ego thing.

And whenever those certain black belts that won't roll with newb white belts that suck really bad, they think they're too good to roll with them. They won't even roll with little kids. Which is f**ked up. At least all the academies I've trained at, all the black belt instructors will roll with kids, women, big and strong dudes, small and weak dudes, everyone. No discrimination when it comes to rolling.

Yeah, those that show up for class the most are the favorites, as it should be!

Yeah, mat rats and guys that compete a lot will probably get a little more attention. And just on a personality level, a coach is still a human and will be drawn to like some people more than others, just like I like some of my training partners more than others.

Yes and No. Everybody is a paying member so you favor all of them. It is just shown in different ways. Unless they are jerks.

Yes, at my academy the guys who show up more often, work harder and complain less get more attention and coaching from the instructors.

Its the most efficient way to run a team. The coach needs to favor and spend more time with beginners because they need more reinforcement and instruction on adjustments. They also need to gain a feeling of what a master of technique feels like when they roll rather than some odd purple belt who can smash them out.

If your more experienced grapplers are taking more of your time than beginners, you have a flawed system that will not produce long term success.

I think long term success for any academies is for the black belt instructors to roll with EVERYONE. Little kids, women, small and weak guys, big and strong guys. Roll with ALL students from white belt to black belt. No discriminating on the mat.

That is a total bs thread.

Since when the job of an instructor is to be a sparring partner.

You do not go to a kickboxing gym and expect the coach to put the gloves and spar with everyone!

Why is it suddenly different in BJJ?

I roll with everyone.
I get tapped out by my own students as they are getting better and I am getting older. In fact, I lost interest into heavy sparring after I reach 40.
But I choose to roll with my students because I want to.
Sometimes I feel guilty as I should be watching and coaching during rolling.
Instead of just rolling.

But I would never expect it from an instructor because some people think they paid for a punching bag.

Very few black belts will roll with me just due to my size. The ones that do though(Saulo, Xandi, and the like) take up all my mat time so I'm cool with it.

my coach will roll with anyone. smashes everyone, from fresh whitebelts to huge black belts. It's pretty cool being able to roll with somebody with skills like that

Striking and grappling is different.

That's very awesome. Whenever I see world class black belts spending their time rolling with little kids, I give them a lot more respect for that.
