i never have worn a cup and i have never been hurt... except for this one armbar, but there has never been anything that has hurt for more than a few seconds and even those are very infrequent
I don't really care too much if somebody wears a cup or not, although I never wear one and don't need to. If you do wear one you need to make sure you aren't developing bad habits, unless the only reason you are grappling is for sport. I've seen too many guys that can't pull off kneebar without a cup and can't hold guard without getting their nuts hit. Just learn how to do it right and there is rarely a problem. Chance of getting a serious injury is actually pretty minimal in grappling, and the potential for a little pain should certainly help you iron out those problem areas.
For those with aspirations of MMA fighting it makes sense to train with a cup at least periodically...just like mout-guards and gloves.
I dont wear a cup. I had a bad experience in high school when i used to wrestle where a ball slipped out and got pinched and it was 10 times worse than a groin shot.
I was in the canadian btt open last week, and cups were not allowed because they can be used for leverage.
So no, not everyone uses cups, and sometimes you are not allowed
I don't use a cup and in my school i don't think anyone actually wears one either. I think if I wore a cup it would make me feel a bit unconfortable and hinder my grappling, but who knows i have never wore one so i don't know.
My 3rd night of Judo I landed wrong with my legs and somehow my "marbles" got pinched (legs landed on top of each other instead of next to each other). Pain shot straight up to my throat! After class, I went to the nearest sporting goods store and bought one and always wear it during class. It has definately helped.
I don't. I know tons of people that don't. I've been hit in the nuts when grappling maybe two or three times, and it just doesn't bother me all that much.
Probably the most embarassing thing that I've ever heard about related to not wearing a caup was from a friend of mine who trains at a different school. He was trying to pass his instructor's guard. I guess his instructor suddenly shifted his hips or opened his guard or something when my friend was trying to grab the hip to pin it to the mat, because he apparently got a handful of weiner instead.
Last week I caught a hard knee to the A hole, missed my balls by a cunt hair. Just too close of a call. Needless to say I will be wearing the cup from now on, gotta protect my comfy spot at least when we are rolling no gi pretty hard.
I don't wear a cup, and have never taken a hard shot. What's more, I find that I'm pretty good at getting The Boys out of trouble since you're a lot more aware. The guys who wear a cup always seem to get hit/mashed, mainly because they don't have to bother avoiding things.
Your technique sucks if you can't pull off an armbar or kneebar without sterilizing yourself.

LOL! Happened to me about my third week of judo or so. My leg position on falls was correct from that day foward. Brutal pain. It also hurts freakishly bad to knock your knees together in the same manner.
BTW, don't wear a cup, but lately I've been thinking about wearing something other than just the tighty whities. Maybe a padded jock strap thingy or somethingy.
i don't wear a cup in training because the thought of having my nuts squashed by the rim of the cup scares me. of course one usually has to wear a cup at tournaments.
when i wrestle, i never my coach put fear in be by sayin its a good way to lose a nut..id rather get it hard in the nut from a shot, then fallin down and having my nut chopped off my by cup
I don't wear one, but I really should have when I was doing Judo; too many low ranked guys trying their first Uchi-Matas = my nuts located somewhere around my navel.
Seriously, I find that it gets in the way at times, and if it slips too much......*shudder*, bad things can happen.
