Matt Hughes was clearly the #1 P4P fighter in the world at his prime and this is undisputable.

Many had Gomi as the #1 P4P for his amazing run at LW

And many people forget but for almost 2 years, many ranking sites had Duane Ludwig at the top of the P4P list for his 1 minute TKO over Jens Pulver (Who was fresh off of beating BJ, Caol Uno, for the LW title, and Dennis Hallman), and Duane had a win over Genki Sudo, who was coming off of wins over Nate Marquardt, Tiki, and former World Champ Mike Brown.

I think he has the most #1 P4P wins over anyone, people seem to forget because guys like Gomi and Ludwig had some bad losses that made people forget that they were at one point one of the sports best.

Bj is the best. Fuck anybody who even bring up a GSP

The fact Duane Bang Ludwig was ever #1 on P4P just made me realize even more so how imaginary P4P is

Bj is the pfp greatest mma fighter of all time, with hendo coming in a close second.

many had gomi as number 1 p4p? Coming off of a loss to Hellboy? Or do you mean later, when he had success but absolutely wasn't number 1 p4p because Fedor existed? is BJ Penn inheriting Gomi's success?

Hughes being number 1 in 2004 is debatable, not indefensible I guess, but would you really have Matt hughes above a Wanderlei Silva, who had just won the grand prix and was on a 15 fight unbeaten streak, 13 wins, 11 finishes? I probably wouldn't.

I get it, we all like BJ Penn, he was exciting, fearless, skilled, etc, but this fictional account of history to add to the worship to make him more than what he was has to stop. He's not a top 5 LW all time, he's not a top 10 fighter all time. He is easily the most important lightweight ever because if it wasn't for him, the lightweight division probably wouldn't exist. He's a pioneer and should be respected for that, but people creating ways to have him be an ATG bugs me.

TS is P4P best at using imaginary numbers to make people think they're facts.

Damn right. BJ fans delusional as always. Except he is a top 5 lw tho.

There was no unifying org. for
the lighter weight classes. So the
rankings have always been marred.

Ludwig was no joke. Was a high
level kickboxer, Rutten protege
& was capable of some pretty
impressive win streaks. Not arguing
that he should be #1 on any list.
But back then, having a lighter guy
ranked higher or lower than what
was probably deserved was not
uncommon. No bones about it,
though... he was a challenge for
anyone stepping in to fight him.
Particularly for ex opponents of BJ's.

Though, the real answer to OP's
question would probably be someone
like Jones or Henderson... I will say,
as a BJ nuthugger... that he has
always fought the best the world
has had to offer. At a time when his
weight class was not recognized for
it's value & depth... he challenged
himself by fighting out of his weight
class, against the best there was.

He was never dropped from strikes,
despite this valiant effort, either.

So, maybe not the p4p best top 10
wins... but certainly one of the best
resumes, especially for such a
comparably short list of opponents.

& ABSOLUTELY p4p biggest sack
of nuts in the sport.

Juist curious..5 lw's ahead of him?

I actually get Edgar, RDA but after that...?

Man I messed up big time the other day boys. Big time.

Boredom and curiosity got the best of me. You guys know where I'm going with this right?

I opened up a click bait article I saw on fb and it had fucking BJ Penn on a list of UFCs most overrated champions.

Great post by the way. I'm not sure which Penn/Hughes fight I enjoyed the most honestly. The first one seemed once in a lifetime at the time and the third fight I spent 15 minutes explaining to my friend their huge rivalry. Then BJ running out of the cage again was awesome haha.
