When they 'sing' , do they repeat some sounds, or tonality and speed is always different ?

A professor was explaining how the "alpha" in a certain species of bird sings a dominant song and the less dominant bird sings a less dominant song, which doesn't attract mates.

I asked "if he's not gonna get a mate anyway, why's the beta bird even singing a song?"

He said. "Maybe the instinct to sing something is so strong. It's the difference between having a nice sports car and getting good grades, I suppose."

That quote has been with me ever since and prompted me to create this thread 11 years later.

Maybe it's not dominance, but more confidence. Just like with people. You can sound insecure when you are and sound confident when you are. Hard to fake it if you aren't it.
