Does anybody else feel that movies have gone downhill since social media took over?

Movies have completely lost their edge.

Just compare Spiderman: Homecoming to Spiderman 2. It's a joke.

People think Dunkirk is the greatest war movie ever.

If Saving Private Ryan had never come out, and came out today, people would shit their pants.

It's like people forgot entirely about the world before social media existed and turned everybody into a bunch of copy cat sjw morons with no edge.

There can not be directors like Stanley Kubrick or Sam Peckinpah anymore, they would get run out of town.

They've been going to shit slowly since STAR WARS Ep.IV.

Film as commerce vs Film as art.

When movies like Gladiator, Braveheart, Saving Private Pyan came out they were/are amazing. But I think watching movies back then was more special because you had to make slightly more effort to see them than today.

Watching a movie even in your own home like that used to be an event. Now everything is on demand we take it for granted and think 'fuck it, if we only watch half we can finish another time'...takes away movie experience.

Saving Private Ryan is still great to this day! I find myself interested in so few movies these days because there are so many super hero movies and too many actors are coming out spewing their political expertise on the general public which makes me lose interest in them, but my movie genre interest is pretty narrow honestly. Although, I am looking forward to the Death Wish remake with Bruce Willis

Exactly.

People don't understand how releasing a new Star Wars movie every fucking year is going to cheapen the hell out of the series.

And not only that but these new Star Wars movies are nothing more than big budget fan fiction.

It's like if when Michael Jackson bought the rights to the Beatles music and decided he was going to make a Beatles album. It's like, no... sorry, you aren't the Beatles, and Disney is not George Lucas (flawed as he is, he IS Star Wars).

It's like somebody not J.R.R. Tolkein writing another LOTR book. It's like, no, fuck off, make your own story. Oh but you can't because you have no creativity because all you do is sit on social media all day in a fucking echo chamber...

I don't know if it's social media but it's all garbage for the most part.

I feel like horror films are completely dead these days
Like beyond dead

Maybe "social media" is so popular because of the general public's shit taste in general. That then explains the dearth of good films, music, books, etc.

Genres rise and fall.

But people have been saying movies are going downhill for as long as I can remember.

I'm starting to enjoy the amateur section of pornhub more than the big budget productions.

Well if anything is perceived as remotely offensive to anyone then the project risks getting crucified on social media. So I imagine that can't be good for the creative process

There is a lot more interest in television series nowadays than movies IMO. I couldn't give a shit about what movies are out, but I'm always interested in new shows on HBO, Showtime, Netflix, AMC, etc.

People would rather watch a tv series. 2-3 hours is too short to fleshout a good story imo

This is no different then people like myself that think music of today sucks compared to say the 90's for instance.

We are called critical people and our opinions are not always that of the majority.

trailers, spoilers, torrent, leaks ect give away the aura of movies. We also don't have blockbuster or video stores in general.

I remember when my dad took me out to see mortal fuking kombat, I told my dad I'll be back because I wanted to see the posters of the upcoming movies for trailers that haven't been out yet. When I did this I used my every bit of imagination of how the trailer would look like. When the trailers did come out be it during pre movie screening or on tv, it's a one time thing, meaning it's you're only time to see every bit of it, so brace yourself and tune the fuk in for the epic ness. And every time this happened, it just kept building more momentum that when the movie finally comes, I'm in for a fukking roller coaster ride.

Sadly we don't experience that these days! Fukking miss the late 80's, 90's

The days of long stretch of lines outside the movie theater and people camping outside their music store for concert tickets are long gone with technology. I remember seeing the long lines outside the theater when the first batman opened during the week

Technology and free access to content wheter by illegal or legal means pretty much trivialized music. There is no importance to music because you don't have to pay $10 for an album or go to a tower record to sample an album before you buy it. No longer people have to rely on radio to hear their favorite song if they don't have an album or wait for MTV/VH1 to play their favorite music video. Just head to youtube and voila

See, Lars was right. But he got absolutely crucified for speaking the truth when few would.

"OH, rich man wants more money."

No, it's called a musician wanting to preserve the ability for all musicians to profit from their craft. Now it is increasingly hard to do so. I was once an aspiring musician until I realized because I don't look like a male model it wouldn't happen. Nobody cares how intricate of songs I can write, they only care if I look like a Jonas kid or whatever. It's sad what this world has become, so quickly, and people not even realizing it.

That doesn't mean it's false!

I'm a step ahead of you ama-bruh. Always felt that way tbh. Better a real 7 than a plastic 9.

It's not the experience of buying or discovering music that has soured it for me. It's the quality of the music and the fact that the band aspect is no longer appreciated as it used to be. It seems everything these days is solely geared around the vocalists. So much so I refer to this generation as the American Idol generation.
