Do you watch the FIFA World Cup?

I watched a few minutes of Ivory Coast vs. Japan last night, only because it was playing in the restaurant I was in. Honestly soccer can't keep my attention because they don't score enough. This game was an exception because within the few minutes I was watching Ivory Coast scored two goals. They tied the game and then took the lead in a very short time period. If that happened more often in soccer I would find it watchable but when almost 90 minutes have gone by and the score is 0-0 I find that to be an incredibly boring affair. They need some progression in the score board to make it interesting.

apart from honduras, cameroon, and greece, there have been goals this world cup. in fact 33 goals have been scored in 3 days.

If the game is end to end and both teams are creating chances, why is the scoreline relevant?

I've heard this argument before and I find it strange.

I sometimes make the opposite argument for why I can't really watch basketball much anymore. They score so often it seems unimportant. In soccer when a goal is scored it truly means something. It's worth waiting.

Gonna watch one of the most athletic manlets in the world right now.

You need to watch more Italian sides or Chelsea or even Norway's national team.

Too many goals too count.

i voted "some"

i wont sit and watch any games, but ill have them on in the background while im at home. Ill pay attention for a 5 minute stretch here or there. Guys at my work take time off to have entended lunch breaks to watch games, but i dont join them.

This thread will attract 2 types: 1. Soccer fans 2. Soccer haters. The people in the middle will entirely overlook this thread, and that's actually the group that would matter most.

This.

Btw I'm right now sort of casual fan and I'll watch some matches and the matches involving the national team of the country where I live just bc is another opportunity to stay together with friends drink spritz and smoke weed.

In the past I used to watch more football matches.

Because winning matters. In fact, that is the goal of sports.

I watch soccer for one month every 4 years.

Love watching the world cup but have zero interest in anything outside of it.

Since there has been 0 games end 0-0 this WC, you should probably watch a few more games. Averaging at least 3 goals a game at this point.

3 goals in 90 minutes is only a goal every 30 minutes. That may sound like a lot to a soccer fan, but for casual viewers that has to be pretty low amongst the major sports.

I watch bits and pieces of whatever game is on while I'm home, but I can't watch a full game of running back and forth, especially with baseball and the NBA finals going on.

I don't mean the scoreline being relevant full stop (my mistake) I meant why would his enjoyment be predicated on a certain scoreline as if just because a game has 8 goals means it's better than a game with 3?

Is it just you don't feel anything is being accomplished unless a team is scoring with regularity or at least more often than in football?

I'm actually convinced some American sports fans genuinely just love seeing the scoreboard change.

Well, I'm basketball fan casually, and I grew up loving it. Can't really say anything about it other than I can typically only be entertained in the 1st and 4th quarters of basketball. So much scoring makes it anti-climatic imo.

As for baseball, I can't be bothered to watch people stand on a field for 2-3hrs. It makes what you think doing nothing in soccer, look like a million things are happening.

Everyone has their right to an opinion on which sports they prefer. I just wish people could understand that there are aspects of soccer other than goals that are very entertaining to watch. You'd think you'd realize that's the case with other sports too.

If it's not resulting in points then what is it accomplishing? I don't care how many crazy nutmegs and no look passes happen in the middle of the field if it doesn't result in anything. Sports are about winning and in soccer that means scoring more goals than your opponent.

That argument can be used in pretty much any sport. It just sounds like you're the type that literally gets excited seeing the scoreboard change, not the action on the field.

This coming from the same person who loses interest in basketball because the scoreboard changes too much. It's not about the scoreboard changing, it's about players and teams overcoming obstacles to produce something great. If it is just endless futility, then nothing is being produced.

Based on the part bolded I'm going to have to assume you've never watched a game of football.

You asked why the score matters if there is end to end action. I answered it saying nothing about the tendencies of soccer. You and Noblet are now getting upset because you are assuming things. I think soccer is boring for different reasons than the score, although I think my reasons influence the lack of scoring in soccer.

understandable. For what it's worth I can appreciate any sport when it's the best in the world performing against each other, hence why I sporadically watch the world cup.

I agree about basketball, you really only need to watch the 4th quarter, and even then when it's close in the last 3 minutes and there are constant fouls it gets really annoying and anti-climactic.

Also in baseball, it can be really boring as a casual fan. I really only got into it because I have a favorite team and I started playing fantasy, which gives you a rooting interest around the league. The excitement for me in baseball is everything around the game. They definitely have the most interesting offseason and trade deadline of any of the major sports. They also have the most advanced and in-depth analysis, which makes it great for a stat nerd like me.

with all of that being said, my favorite sport is football anyway :P. Amazing mix of atheleticism, incredible amounts of strategic planning and tactical adjustments.

Neither of us are upset, more confused on your stance I'd say. Doesn't help your replying to us without sharing the sentiments of the poster we were originally questioning.
