Do you think MMA is dying ?

I think the sport is growing but MMA is dying.

I've been a hardcore fan since the beginning and I can say for certain that the Zuffa business model has destroyed everything that was good and beautiful about the sport.

Do I think MMA is dying?

Absolutely not. I think it is probably growing. I think that many people considered it that backyard brawling, don't tell your GF's parents your into it, I am a badass for watching it sport into a legit sport and people aren't happy because there goes their bragging rights.

An analogy. Metallica. People loved them when no one knew them. They were "my secret in my back pocket and is why I am actually cooler than you" but all of sudden they went mainstream and now it is crap.

The UFC is trying to become another regular sport on regular channels. It is hard since there is a sense of violence (same as most sports IMO) that isn't as much in your face as other sports.

Long story short...OUR sport is doing fine. Change and progress with it or be left behind hating.

It's popularity is definitely declining. But it will always be around, even if only a few people watch it.

It's just become duller and duller over the past 3 years. It's hard to say why, maybe it's just that the novelty of it being "as real as it gets" has warn off. There are fight cards every weekend, and there aren't as many stars as there used to be. Nobody cares about 90% of the fighters today.

No. It's evening out in the US but growing by leaps and bounds overseas. In Singapore where i'm from its growing very popular and young people are training in gyms now. Girls are training it for fitness because of ronda rousey. My housemate from the seychelles says all his friends are really in to it now.

I dont think people will be happy with one ppv every 3-4 weeks because there are so many injury pullouts. The past 2 years are the example.
I am fine with these "watered down" weekly events.
Btw, in my life, more people know/follow the mma (the ufc to be more exact) lately.
So, no. It aint dying or slowing down imo.

It will be very wrong to say that MMA is dying. I found that it is experiencing great coverage and good popularity in recent times. Skilled mixed martial artists with their styles and techniques is making the game even more engrossing.

No. It may not be growing at the rate it once was. But it is certainly not dying.

Ive heard a lot of people saying that the sport is declining and that the cards are watered down. A lot of people appear to be losing interest. It reflects in the ppv buys.

Express your opinions here. If you have lost interest, why ?

EDIT: ok wrong terminology. ...obviously the sport isnt about to die. A large fraction of the fanbase is losing interest though. For those losing interest, i am interested in hearing why.

Yes, it is dying. I know because this same thread is being made 100 times a week. Also when Sherdog talks more about a fighter that's 1-3 instead of 7-0 shows us the lack of interest in sport itself. It's more a WWE thing at the moment where poeple like to see certan fighters lose.

The market will probably stay the same in America and in Brazil, rest of the world will never be a part of the UFC or MMA. MMA is obviously not mainstream material, ever since the FOX UFC deal a lot of new fans were pulled to it short term, long term more and more people want to distance themselves from the sport, it's just not as interesting as it used to be pre-FOX (and I won't even bring up the Pride days).

Reality of it all is(when talking about UFC) is the PPV model is not sustainable over a long time period. This has been proven in the past with the WWE. Eventually fans start to cherry pick what events to buy and as more time goes on a larger number of fans do it and slowly they all get even pickier. In the end your average PPV buys tank. The only keeping it from sinking is new fans coming in.

I'm sure many of us on here who maybe in the 2006-2010 time frame may have ordered 6-8 PPV's a year and watched the rest at a bar, you rarely missed a show. Now I bet most of those people now watch some events it at a bar and maybe order 2-3 a year. But you also miss much more events than ever before.

Trust me the UFC is watching WWE new business model very very closely. I'd love to see it work out that way long term for the UFC.

P.S.: None of this means people are not fans anymore. It's just fans are looking for cheaper alternatives to receive the product.

I've been a fan for many, many years and I definitely feel the cards are a lot less intriguing than they used to be. I still watch a lot of MMA, but it's a far cry from when I used to pay for every UFC PPV.

Sadly, it's the same for me. I definitely enjoy catching a PPV now and then but not as religiously.

I don't think it is dying but all the big name fighters are near the end of there career.

That's happened before though. This isn't the first time big name fighters retired. It's not even the first time during the TUF era, which is where a lot of fans come from. Those who are pre tuf know the sport has gone through a lot worse valleys than this.

people see watered down cards i look and go shit I know 11 fighters on that card and that is what gets me too tune in early

People have been complaining about watered down cards since 2006. First it was about cards being filled with crappy TUF fighters. Now people complain about international fighters and fighters they don't recognize.

not sure if I have posted in this thread but TTT for mma dying, it's gonna happen soon folks

A few questions for you.

1. Is boxing a sport?
2. Is wrestling a sport?
3. Is Taekwon Do a sport?
4. Is Judo a sport?
5. Is BJJ a sport?
6. Is Muay Tai a sport?

The answer to all these is yes. So, how is it that you can combine all these sports (that are either olympic sports or competed at the world championship level) and have something thats not a sport?

And just so you know, making money and entertaining is more important than the actual sport in every organization around, including

NFL
MLB
NBA
NHL

Why do you think the NFL would preach about player safety and then do the no.1 thing they could possibly do to make the game less safe by trying to have an 18 game season?

Its all about money, not just for the UFC but all organizations.

A lot of people think cards were stronger back in the day because they didn't air the prelims. Once you introduce another handful of fights to an event - most of which are "irrelevant" - it gives the appearance of a watered-down card, when in reality those fights were always there, they just didn't broadcast them. I think Fight Nights on Spike were only four fights long.
