The injury thread reminded me of how Showtime was known for a while as "Shelftime" due to being chronically injured. How much do you think his string of injuries contributed to the downfall of this beautiful man?

Not nearly as badly as USADA and his own ego did.

Maybe, could be just he lost his confidence. It sucks to see him go through this down fall, he's one of my favorite fighters ever.

That fame and party life and not being as dedicated as he could have been cut his prime short.

No, he got figured out. If you don't let him get all fancy and you grind on him, he loses his best weapons.

Thought he might be a Legend for a while. Guess he needed more Wheaties for breakfast.

He got figured out and then USADA put the final nail in the coffin.

USADA, with Rousey Level boxing skills, minus the power.

Nope. He’s just a one dimensional fighter. He has great kicks, but also shit boxing and wrestling. Any average pressure fighter/wrestler could beat him with ease....and did.

I think Pettis is / was a great fighter. That fight against Henderson was amazing. Obviously the showtime kick stole the show, but the whole fight was a thing of beauty, a back and forth technical war. One of the best LW fights I´ve seen.

There's the fact that the competition gets tougher and tougher.

Also, Pettis got figured out. There´s a blueprint to beat him.

But sometimes great fighters (like Penn for example) stay only a very short time at the top. And the fact that so many great fighters fail to stay on top for long, imo just reinforces the idea that mma is one of the toughest sports on the planet and with so many variables, that basically anything can happen and a fighter might lose everything "just like that". So yeah, Pettis was an excellent fighter, but the competition has caught up to him.

That´s why you have to respect guys like Fedor, Aldo, GSP for being so dominant, for so many years fighting the best of the best.

Boxing and wrestling almost always beats TKD. He wasn't rounded enough and I do see a noticable difference since USADA to boot.
