Do you give homeless people money?

When you see a homeless person, on the corner, at the store with a sign etc asking for money do you give them some?

Curious because i used to a LOT in my late teens early 20s. I stopped the day i was on my way to work filling up gas (5am or so) and a homeless lady came and asked me for money (some sob story i forget exactly) basically for bus fare.

I end up giving her over $6 in quarters (all my spare quarters), after i go in and pay for my gas she comes up to my window as I'm about to pull away and more or less says she saw when i paid for gas i had multiple 20's and if she could just have one of them (she said it in a tone like wtf why did you give me change when you have real money). So i said fuck it and let her keep the $6 and drove off, i haven't given money since.

I do however usually have a pack of new waters in my car most of the time, and on occasion i will hand them a unopened water or two, had people reject them before.

What about you, do you give money?

NEVER. Funny story actually. Yesterday I'm sitting at a red light. A cop comes flying into a parking lot next to where I'm sitting which draws my attention to the bum with a sign sitting there. Before the car is even in park the cops getting out of his car, I'm thinking wow did Portland FINALLY outlaw panhandling? I look to the bum and he appears to be nodded off, the cop is standing directly in front of him bout 2 feet away when the bum snaps his head up. THIS MOTHERFUCKER WAS SITTING THERE TAKING A SHOT OF DOPE. Broad day light in the same fucking spot he's begging, doesn't even have the common decency to go behind a bush or dumpster or suffa

A homeless guy at a gas station in L.A. saw that I needed a quarter to complete some sort of purchase and gave me a quarter.

Sometimes. I know a fair amount of folks think it's a sucker thing to do, but it doesn't bother me. I'm not very attached to money, so if I see a beggar I'll let some go here and there. What they do with it is on them.

Haven't done it since I was a kid.
I've learned that handing them
money doesn't help anyone involved.

But I pack fruit, iced water bottles,
& during the winter, I'll have some
throw away blankets in my trunk that
I ask friends or family for & hand em
out when I see someone who doesn't
look prepared for the weather.

I've had some who reject the water.
I find that theyre more likely to
accept if it's cold water. But no
one has ever turned down food.
If I have the cash or have extra
hygiene products from dental
visits, I'll fill zip lock bags with
toiletries & shit & hand those
out too.

If I had the cash to do so, I'd drive
around with extra shoes & jackets.

The homeless problem in this
country & in my city is abhorrent.
It's despicable & it's a disgrace
that this country can't even take
care of its own people, fundamentally.

All I know is that if I ever, god forbid,
end up in their positions, that
someone would be willing to help
me with some food & warmth. I've
spoken with enough of them to
know that it can happen to anyone.


With that said, if I dont have anything
to offer them for whatever reason,
& I have the time to do so... I'll offer
them that & chop it up with them
for a half hour. An ear, a word &
a smile can go a long way for them
as well.

I gave the last homeless guy my spare change a long time ago and he sorted the coins into 3 big piles, pennies, nickles & dimes, and quarters and he had more money than I had on me so fk that. If I see a legit looking homeless guy who appears down on his luck I'll help him out with something but these 24 year old street kids begging for change, no chance. I've even torn up a sign before because they sit there begging for weed money like it's fun.... being homeless in Vancouver is quite profitable tbh, super annoying.

I do however I also find it funny that in many cases those grimy forlorn faces make more than I do with their gig. Dont be fooled, a lot of these guys are pro cons most evidenced by health beneath the filth. I always give the healthy looking ones change and the legit looking ones bills.

People like that deserve all the happiness the world can give but for whatever reason the world shafted them. It pisses me off that the most generous people have nothing while the greediest have everything. Makes sense but still irritating.
