Do whitening strips actually work?

Has anyone ever used these things? I was recently talking to a friend at the gym who happens to be a dental hygienist and she said that bleaching your teeth is great but it's super expensive and whitening strips do a pretty damn good job at a fraction of the price.
Anyone ever use strips with success?
