TUF season 1 showed UFC fighters as athletes and competitors. It really built the sport and culminated in an epic show of wills between Griffin and Bonnar. PPV sales and TV ratings jumped immediately.

Now, it just shows a bunch of drunks acting like idiots. Drama, etc. It serves as an anti-sport promotion. If you'd never seen UFC before and then you saw modern TUF drama, wouldn't you just think the UFC was a joke?

I seem to remember that it was the early seasons of TUF where the UFC decided to try to make the show like an MTV Real World rip off with all kinds of silly drama instead of focusing on fighting.

My problem with it now is that they are having seasons' with washed up fighters and all kinds of gimmicks rather than focusing on young fighters looking to make a name and get into the UFC. And the same divisions over and over again.

Wasn't season 1 the one with i.e. Leben and pissing in the bed and so on and so forth? Are you romantizising the past?

Yeah if anything the earlier seasons had even more of the guys acting like drunken idiots and less training/fighting

Fuck, maybe I'm just getting older. But it's embarrassing to tell adult peers that you're a fan of a sport, so they tune in and see that -- and they must think I'm retarded or something's wrong with me to be a die-hard fan of that at 25+. It's like meeting a dude that LOVES PRO WRESTLING at 40 years old. Maybe I gotta stop watching this shit.

The first season set the standard of drama. Dudes who couldn't make weight, alcoholics who turned all emotional when drunk and etc.

All the other seasons saw that and tried to top it. The new seasons have cut a lot of the bullshit out, and it is mostly fighting. At least that is what the "Redemption" season looked like. I think those guys were on PEDs, they were fighting at a tremendous pace, that UFC fighters can't even keep up with. LOL

Imagine you're a grown man. You watch NBA and NFL every weekend. Your co-worker is telling you all about this awesome sport. Martial arts, 2 men fighting, it sounds fucking awesome.

So, the NCAA finals are over and you decide to tune in and give the sport a chance. You're expecting to drink some beers with your bros and enjoy some awesome sports. Maybe find a new sport to get into and follow regularly. Instead, you're watching this:

TUF isn't a brand building show anymore. It's anti-marketing. It turns potential new fans away in droves.

I had trouble imagining myself as a grown man so I gave up on the first part.

I don't think I've watched a full episode of TUF so I can't rly speak for that. I mean, if someone wanted to get into MMA wouldn't they watch MMA rather than a reality show?

i haven't watched a full series of tuf since Bisping/Miller

before that it was Rampage/Rashad

Can't they do both? I did. I found TUF highly entertaining back in the days, and it certainly helped to get me hyped for the sport in general.

Of course they can do both. I'm saying if someone wanted to get into MMA, I would show them MMA.

You're talking about Season 1 of TUF and conveniently ignore Chris Leben?

Maybe you need to rewatch season 1 and 2 and so forth, they have always acted like drunken retards in the house. The only thing that's different, is that the talent pool gets shallower because the really great fighters get into the UFC without TUF, it's the guys who seem to be just not good enough that try to get in through TUF.
I think watching a PPV together is a much better way of getting people into MMA, or better yet, show them some youtube highlights of fights.

I just like seeing the highlights from the fights the next day. This next season of TUF is all undefeated fighters with DC and Stipe so it should be fairly serious this time around. Dana whites Tuesday night contendor series is the best for just seeing some live action with no drama. Does anyone know when the second season starts?

I think I followed older TUF until they changed the theme song. Everything else went downhill from there.

They should now do a weekly WWE RAW style show instead, with a mix of recorded interviews, live interviews, classic old fights, live no-name fights, and one good fight as the main event.

I’d love fighters to start refusing to be on it

I’d hate to be on a shitty show like that

Not trying to be a dick, but do you have a source or some form of official stat regarding TUF driving away new fans in droves?
