Do movies need a happy end?

I like movies like "the Road" that are just dark. Knowing that everything is going to be okay at the end kinda takes away the realism in my opinion. That's what attracted me to the TWD at first. The fact that (almost) every character could die at any given point really added to the grittiness.

Seems like most people would rather have a happy ending. I don’t mind either way as long as it’s not too contrived.

It’s kinda like how some people need to see the proper justice served to every bad guy in the film. Almost every movie has always been like that even though it’s unrealistic. The audience feels robbed otherwise

Agree. Theres been a few times where I was watching a movie that I didnt find that great. But then it just ends. No happy ending, just done and over. And it makes the movie great.
