How do you perform the dips? Do you try to stay as upright as you can, or do you lean forward while going down? Of course it's easier to lean forward since you engage your chestmuscles much more. Feels like the squat-question: You can't prevent from leaning forward but you should stay upright as much as possible...

1 - Go down as deep as your flexibility will allow. Try to get to the point where your shoulders are lower than your elbows in the bottom position.

Remember this depth.

2 - Load up as much weight as you can to a dip belt and wear it.

3 - Dip down to the previous depth.

4 - Push yourself back up.

Whatever position you need to be in to come back up and do 2 to 7 more reps is the correct position.

I see no point in staying as upright as possible, cause that seems to put the shoulders in an awkward position, almost popping out of their sockets.

Just be sure to aviod making the forward lean into a slithering snake manouver to make the exercise easier.

Thanks guys, that pretty much sums it up for me!

Staying up right works well for body building as it places the load more on the triceps, as someone already pointed out you can't go very deep using this technique as it will put too much stress on the shoulder joints.
.
If you're doing dips to develope upper body strength as opposed to developing your horse shoe lol then go as deep as you can with good form

agreed with everyone else. more upright for more emphasis on the tricep or lockout power and leaning forward and going as low as you can safely for overall upper body development and strength.

thx guys, I can finally dip the hell out of myselfs ;)

I like to lean forward when I do the dip. It feels like more of a whole body thing like someone has already said and thats the way I like it.

Do you guys cross your legs when doing dips? When doing pullups? Does it really matter? I remember watching some nsac vid on proper pullups and the body was practically straight with straight legs.

crossing legs: dips - yes
pullups - no
