Dining with martians

I've only played 7 string a few times, scales are hard for me with the extra string and I've got tiny hands. I do like that low end though.

View it as two instruments in one - see the bottom four strings as a down-tuned B-standard or drop A sixer and the top six as a normal E-standard. That was my reasoning when I bought an Ibby RG7321. Granted, as I progressed I then saw it as a complete instrument - that extra low B allows you to extend chords in a rather pleasant manner and write stuff without having to self-censor due to the (somewhat) lesser range of a six.

On topic - Back on the diet train myself this weeks been 1000cals or so deficit a day so far.

Off topic.

Had hardly any issues going from a 6 to a 7 apart from picking a 6 up after playing the 7 for a bit and wondering where the other string was.

At the min mine are setup:

Ltd 7 Tele - B standard/Drop A
Ltd Eclipse - E Standard
Jackson RR - A
Dean V - Drop B/C# Standard
Gibson Melody Maker - Open C
PRS SE - D Standard
Peavy Tele - E Standard/Drop D

Plus a Jackson Dinky with a floyd to mess around with thats my housemate's for when i fancy divebombing.

Looking for a new amp soon. My housemates got a Mesa Combo that i love and if i had the cash would buy it off him.

There we go - a modest deficit created for tomorrow's berzerk at the buffet. It's going to be cwaaayzaaaay

No tracking to be had, just a report on todays meals. Started the day off with a sorely anticipated pig-out at the buffet. Had eight plates including the ice cream with all of the toppings they had to offer. Was so bloated once I finished the meal off with two glasses of water I thought I was going to explode/hurl/cry, but managed to walk the four k's home and ferment in the confines of my own bed. Managed to cram a good 2.5 hour session at the gym, then had a tub of quark with upwards of 170g nuts and seeds and 2 tbsp jam, three pieces of hard bread with liberal amounts of cheese (~100g?) and zacusca, and a salad with carrots, tomato and about... 150(?)g of cashew nuts, sprinkled with about two tablespoons of canola oil.

On a private note I've been pretty disgusted with the moral decay of society via social and digital media as of late, which gives me added fuel to separate myself from it and hop on the Nofap train again, hopefully for good this time. Those aforementioned prostate issues I had caused me to relapse under the guise of "promoting good health", but it's fucking my focus up, so I'm back on track, hopefully with new-found resolve.

The big-titty-girl I've seen a couple of times probably clicked me when I called yesterday. She probably got the D from someone else, seeing as how she's been responsive when I've contacted her in all other instances. Welp.

Oh well, fill the rotation up with other willing participants.

Gonna go for a very slow bulk. Circa 500 calorie surplus on training days, adjusting intake on rest days to keep my weekly caloric gain at 2000 tops.

Btw rik and Aleks, you've got any amp suggestions for a guy who's a fan of Lamb of God-type crunch? I've grown out of the ultra high-gain scooped 90s-type sound, and kinda fell in love with the distorted tones Petrucci gets out of the Mesa Boogie Mark V:25 in this vid, but that thing is prohibitively expensive in the EU. Got similar tips?

See if you can find a half decent used Mark 4 would be my guess. Thats pretty much what the LOG sound was for years. Otherwise maybe a Peavey 5150/6505

My own Dual Recto is on my list to get. My housemates is the tremoverb version and i've nearly got that sound i'm looking for on it.

Having owned a 5150 and a 6505 I wouldn't use one for a Lamb of God sound.

Used Mark IV is the actual amp, but would be hard to find for a decent price in the EU.

I recommend an Engl Savage or a Peavey Triple XXX (mark 1 for sure, I haven't played a mark 2 but I don't see why it wouldn't be the same). Both of those amps have that dry, crunchy definition that typifies the LOG sound. Works well for thrashier sounds too, and progressive style work. The Savage is a superior amp but used Triple XXX's are a bargain.

I'm gonna have to hunt those amps down on my next trip to Germany which'll be in a little under two months. Thanks for the tips guys, and keep 'em coming if you come to think of anything in addition to those! I also recently spoke with one of the stores I visited on my last trip back in 2008, that had an impressive collection of top-end Warwick models, including a seven string Streamer Stage I. Cool as fuarrk, but store-kept Warwicks tend to be dried out like crazy, which doesn't look good in combination with their heavy use of open-pored Wenge.

I played a mark IV at a show once, it was one of my band mates BFs. Sick gain. I was so used to using a bunch if boss pedals to try to get that crunchy palm mute. Man, I wish I owned that amp.

Never played Engl's, they any good?

I think they still use Mark IV's to record..regardless if they've changed to the Royal Atlantics, the tone you want is from Ashes of The Wake era, which is for sure a Mark IV. Royal Atlantic is a lot of $$$.

As for the Engl's, they're amazing, and have enough variation in the product range to do most things. However, I don't think they're worth the money brand new. If you find a used one, just buy it.

Only average one is the Powerball IMO, the rest are sick. Savage is the best in my experience:

My understanding is that from a pricing perspective, ENGLs are as overpriced in the states as Mesas are in the EU. I'm probably gonna have to shape my choices accordingly, but it's been eons since I last played through a proper top/cab-setup. Gonna feel like an old man sent into the future.

Honestly I wouldn't be able to justify the price difference between a Triple XXX and a Mark IV or Engl unless I was a pro musician. That money could go towards other stuff and the tone difference to my ear isn't worth the financial outlay.

Especially when you start tweaking tube choices on the Triple XXX and even OD pedals to boost the front end, it's a no brainer. Plug that shit into a cab with Vintage 30's and you've got a top class metal tone for all occasions.

^man that sounds beefy. Though I took a stroll around YT and checked out different amp demos as suggested in this thread - the Peavey XXX seems like a good amp as well. Gotta check the european pricing and second hand market around these parts to see what the best option is all things considered.
