“The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”

The first trailer for Tom Cruise’s new film Digger has been released, officially confirming an October 2026 theatrical debut. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind The Revenant and Birdman, the project marks a striking shift away from Cruise’s recent action-driven roles and into far more experimental territory.

Rather than leaning on large-scale spectacle, Digger appears to embrace a darker, more surreal tone. The film has already been described as a “catastrophic comedy”, hinting at a narrative driven by psychological tension, irony, and escalating chaos. For Cruise, this represents one of his boldest career choices in years—an intentional step outside the safety of established franchises.

Set against a destabilizing world, the story reportedly follows Digger Rockwell, a man whose personal reality begins to fracture as events spiral beyond his control. While official plot details remain limited, the early material suggests a film more concerned with mood and character than conventional storytelling.

The ensemble cast also includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D’Arcy.

Seems like Iñárritu is staying in Bardo territory, which I loved. I'm looking forward to learning more. And it's been a long time since Cruise has been in this sort of Eyes Wide Shut/Magnolia/Vanilla Sky territory, i.e. outside the mainstream box in arthouse-land. I wonder what these two managed to put together...

Looks like they finally remade Breakin 2 : Electric Boogaloo, coulda done without the race swapping, though

I wonder if this could be something that allows Cruise to win a real Oscar?

He should already have one for Magnolia, for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost. I also wanted to see him at least nominated for if not awarded Best Actor for Collateral. It'd be awesome if this is a crazy good movie with a leveled-up performance from Cruise that gets him that overdue Oscar.

I feel like Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, and Born on the Fourth of July are three times he absolutely should have won.

I never considered Collateral but he's great in that too.

Bro should have more Oscars than DDL at this point but somehow they've eluded him.

Nah, in 1996 Billy Bob should've won for Sling Blade and in 1989 DDL definitely deserved that win for My Left Foot.

Funny enough, his co-star in Collateral Jamie Foxx won that year, but for Ray.

Well, to be fair to DDL, he should have even more Oscars than he already does. He unquestionably should've won in 2002 for Gangs of New York, and if we want to go back to 1996 and put Cruise and DDL head-to-head (and ignore Billy Bob), I'd give DDL the Oscar for The Crucible before I'd give it to Cruise for Jerry Maguire.

Well said about DDL.

I'm surprised that they got away with that title.

Tom Cruise is The Man, The Myth, The Legend!

An actual creative movie poster that looks more like a 70s polish movie poster than a 2000s Will Smith poster.<smellit>
