There are some Aussie UFC fighters that have played either Rugby, or League, like Volkinovski, for example.
Most Americans here think that he once played Rugby, but he didn't, he played what is usually referred to as League.
So i thought i'd post this video that explains some of the differences.

We need to get the NRL thread back up running

2020 World rugby league revenue: $15 million

NFL 2021 revenue: $11 BILLION

Everything else is virtually identical...

The NFL is basically an entertainment industry with timeouts to freshen up. Don't compare it to actual sports.

Not sure I agree with the checkers/chess comparison which seems condescending to Rugby League. Personally I think really the skill that makes Rugby fun to watch isnt the stuff related to the extra rules in Union but the complexity of movement, passing, etc and League has more of that.

I like Union better, used to play when I was young but I enjoy watching League as well. The Rugby League World Cup starts on the 15th of October in Newcastle (UK), looking forward to it! Australia will probably win.

The Rugby (Union) World Cup is in September next year.

Edit: By the way in relevant news, I remember hearing a few years ago there was a big scandal when it was proven that American Football causes brain damage, we are getting there with rugby too:

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-news/nearly-200-players-issue-legal-24576495

Nearly 200 players issue legal proceedings against rugby's governing bodies after brain damage diagnoses

A group of former rugby players are this week issuing proceedings against World Rugby, the Rugby Football Union and the Welsh Rugby Union over what they claim is failure to protect them from permanent injury caused by repetitive concussive and sub-concussive blows.

The class action, which will be the biggest of its kind outside of the US, has been announced by Rylands Law on behalf of numerous professional and semi-professional rugby union players who are affected by various irreversible neurological impairments. These include early onset dementia, probable CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and motor neurone disease.

All of the players involved in the action are in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

You getting a slice of that mate? You asked why someone would watch rugby over NFL, obviously rugby fans (and there are two different sports which both have the rugby name) prefer it and do not find NFL particularly appealing. NFL is fine for highlights, I watched it as a kid and still have a redskins jersey, but it's way to slow paced and stop-start. Rugby is much better, in my opinion.

NFL is the biggest sport in a country that is a global powerhouse. For various historical reasons rugby (and there are two different kinds of rugby), is not as popular as other kinds of football (ie. Soccer for the most part, or other football games).

It's peanuts compared to the money in American sports anyway, but cherry picking World Rugby finances in a COVID year is a bit daft. Then there is the fact that World Rugby is the governing body of rugby union, not the equivalent to the NFL. Each country has their own national Union, and then various different leagues across different countries and continents (ie. French Top14, English Premiership, the United Rugby Championship, and Super Rugby Pacific). With rugby league added there is the NRL in Australia/NZ, and Super League in England.

I didn’t know that we had a pro rugby union league, but we have a team here in Salt Lake City. The tickets were super cheap so we went to a match. It was blast. Entertaining sport to watch, think I could see myself watching more.

I see a ton of kids around wearing youth rugby clothing so it appears to be growing, at least here.

Yeah Major League Rugby is relatively recent, been about since 2018. Still pretty barebones and low budget as you'd expect but some good rugby and it augurs well for the growth of the sport in the US. All previous attempts at a pro rugby competition in the US crashed and burned pretty swiftly.

According to research from Nielsen, rugby is already the fastest growing sport in the United States, and in a recent YouGov poll, 80% of sports fans said they support the United States hosting a Rugby World Cup.

The United States is in advanced discussions to host the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup and the 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup

Major League Rugby was founded in 2017.

Utah Warriors may be the nearest MLR team to you.

And lol at using revenue as some kind of benchmark. The NFL is centered around a game that the hilariously overweight consumerist population only watches for the commercials.
