I've myself felt pretty emotionally invested in UFC drama at one time. When Conor McGregor started gaining momentum in the UFC, I was at best indifferent to his trash talking other fighters, though I was a bit annoyed and hoped Mendes and Aldo would shut him up eventually . Afterwards with all of the troll fans and newcomers spouting ignorant shit I wanted to shut them all up and followed the story line like I was stalking my crush.
I think it's similar to fans of TV series' like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, where they feel connected to the characters, though in MMA we are dealing with real people and that might make those feelings stronger.
What goes through the mind of the overzealous fans that post dumb shit like "Conor is done" or "Conor is pillow fisted" when he clearly is neither? Or get this gem: "Conor is an actor..." Seems like they put too much emotion into the fighters. Or the ones that want him to fade into obscurity. Something tells me his fans spark more of the emotional responses than Conor himself.
Fans legit seem threatened by Conor or emasculated by him. I dunno seems funny in a way.
Does THIS photo of Conor get die hard haters riled up in the inside?
What about this?
I have my own criticisms of controversial characters, but at the end of the day I do think the actual battle is getting the UFC to create a reasonable balance between merit and money, rather than bash fighters for the tiniest things.
