I just realized the last time anyone saw Carwin in the cage was against JDS in 2011 and he was hurt pretty badly in that fight. Did I miss something or did JDS retire Carwin after or because of that fight? Wasn't he one of the top heavyweights in the world back then only losing to Brock Lesnar?

No, injuries and age retired him. He had fights scheduled after vs Roy Nelson but it never happened

No, he was exposed for buying steroids from some doctor.

Then he came in much lighter for the JDS fight and has been having health issues ever since.

LOL, no. JDS was saved by the bell.

Carwin was scheduled to make multiple comebacks, but got injured every time, mainly back problems. He eventually put out a retirement statement after several failed tries to get through a fight camp.

I have a hard time believing carwin is retired for good. He is too talented and if he came back would be fighting for the belt in two fights. Cain's worst nightmare.

This. A lot of people don't like to bring it up but he got was on a list of athletes that were buying steroids from a doctor. After coming into the fight against JDS much lighter (presumably from stopping use) and then getting badly beaten, he decided it was better to retire.

I loved watching the guy but he left under shady circumstances much like Wandy and Sonnen.

the first time i saw carwin fight, i thought that they may have brought in a shaved gorilla. he was huge, and destroying his opponent so badly while grinning the whole time. that boy was a beast in his day. too bad he had the body ceasing up thing. he would have given cain the biggest challenge in the ufc. i really really miss shane carwin fighting.

Like anybody intelligent said, he had lingering neck and back problems, and JDS happened to be his last fight. JDS didn't break his spirit or retire him, he made a smart choice on his own considering his injuries.

But he went out fighting killers. Respect. Too bad he has neck and back problems, I'd love to see him back. So well spoken and has crazy stupid knockout power.

I wonder if he made any money in his MMA stint.
